Perspectum (formerly Perspectum Diagnostics) is a British medical technology company headquartered in Oxford, England. Spun out of the University of Oxford, the company develops quantitative medical imaging tools and diagnostic software for metabolic diseases, liver disorders, and multi-organ conditions. Its primary technology utilizes MRI and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide non-invasive characterization of human tissue.[1]
History
Perspectum was founded in 2012 by researchers and clinicians associated with the University of Oxford, including Rajarshi Banerjee, Matthew Robson, Stefan Neubauer, and Michael Brady.[2][3] The company's early work focused on developing non-invasive alternatives to liver biopsy for patients with chronic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).[4]
In 2014, Perspectum introduced LiverMultiScan as a research device in Europe and the United States.[5] In 2016, the company's LiverMultiScan MRI device received clearance from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).[6]
In 2019 and 2024, Perspectum received grants from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to support the evaluation of imaging biomarkers for drug development in liver diseases, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).[7] The company was also named to the Red Herring Top 100 Europe list in 2019.[8]
In 2020, Perspectum raised £28.7 million in funding from investors including Blue Venture Fund, HealthQuest Capital, Oxford Science Innovation, Puhua Capital, and the University of Oxford.[9] In 2023, the company secured Series C funding to expand its operations in the United States and further develop its multi-organ imaging platform.[10]
In 2024, Perspectum partnered with the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering at King's College London to collaborate on artificial intelligence-based medical imaging research for metabolic disease and cancer.[11]
In January 2026, Perspectum was ranked number 36 in The Sunday Times Tech 100 list.[12]
Technology and Products
Perspectum’s core technology involves extracting quantitative biomarkers from MRI scans to measure fat, iron, and fibro-inflammation in organs. The company operates a Software as a Service (SaaS) model through its proprietary portal, allowing healthcare providers to process imaging data remotely.[13]
Products
- LiverMultiScan: The company's flagship product, used to evaluate liver tissue non-invasively. It utilizes the proprietary cT1 (corrected T1 mapping) biomarker to measure fibro-inflammation, alongside proton density fat fraction (PDFF) for fat content and T2* for iron quantification.[14][15]
- MRCP+: A diagnostic tool for the visualization and quantitative assessment of the biliary system. It generates 3D models of the bile ducts and gallbladder to assist in the monitoring of conditions such as primary sclerosing cholangitis.[16][17]
- Hepatica: A clinical decision support tool for liver surgery. It combines tissue characterization with volumetry to help surgeons assess the risks associated with liver resection.[18][19]
- CoverScan: A multi-organ imaging suite developed to assess the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. It was used during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitor long-term organ damage.[20][21][22]
