Peter James Adams is a New Zealand population health academic.[1]

Career

Adams completed a masters in philosophy at the University of Auckland in 1979, then trained as a clinical psychologist, working in hospital, community and private practice settings in Auckland from 1981 to 2000.

He completed his PhD in psychology at the University of Auckland in 1991. His first academic post the same year was as a lecturer in communications in the medical program at the Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences. He has worked there since and rose to professor in 2014.[2]

He teaches in the areas of addiction studies,[3] commercial determinants,[4] community development, epistemology and critical theory[5]. He has supervised over 30 PhD scholars.

He has taken an active role in community organizations including: Chair of Problem Gambling Foundation (1997-2002), trustee of Kina Families and Addiction Trust (2001 on), co-founder of North Harbor Living Without Violence Collective (1987-1998) and trustee of Higher Ground (2000-2003) Drug Rehabilitation Program.

Research

Adams began research with a focus on alcohol and drugs in specialist services and primary health. He moved later to focus more on public health, then on the commercial determinants of health, particularly with regards to alcohol, tobacco, gambling and unhealthy food. His background in philosophy has led to an ongoing interest in theory, social theory and rhetoric.

His main research interests are: commercial determinants of health, addiction services, gender-based violence, gambling, mental health, addiction theory, rhetoric & theory, existential issues and spirituality.

He writes regular blogs on his research interests.
