Emeritus Professor Colonel Dr Peter Adrian Leggat, AM, ADC (born 2 December 1961 – died 20 September 2023) was born in Brisbane and studied medical science and medicine at the University of Queensland before joining the Australian Army in 1987. [1] Emeritus Professor Leggat went on to serve in the Australian Regular Army in Australia and Thailand. [1][2] He joined the Australian Army Reserve in 1999 and served in Australia and East Timor. He transferred to the Standby Reserves in 2017 with the rank of Colonel.[1][2]
Emeritus Professor Leggat had a parallel medical and academic career, where he served at the University of Queensland from 1985-1989. From 1992, he served full-time at James Cook University and worked part-time as a medical officer at the Australian Department of Defence and then Aspen Medical. [1][2] He completed a Master of Medical Education from the University of Dundee, and a Master of Public Health and a Master of Health Science from the University of Otago.[1][2] He completed a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Australia, a Doctor of Public Health from James Cook University and a Higher Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Queensland.[1][2]
