Peter B. Freund (Born 19 April 1976) is a minority owner of the New York Yankees and Principal Owner of Trinity Sports Holdings , a portfolio company which owns and operates professional sports teams and venues throughout North America and Europe.[1] He graduated from the Horace Mann School in Riverdale, Bronx, NY and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College.[2]

Career and Affiliations[edit]

Club League Title Years Active
New York Yankees MLB Minority Owner 2011 - present
Memphis Redbirds MiLB Principal Owner 2016 - present
Charleston RiverDogs MiLB Partner 2009 - present
Williamsport Crosscutters MiLB Principal Owner 2014 - present

Freund was President of Trinity Packaging Corporation until 2017 when the company was acquired by ProAmpac.[3] Prior to leaving, Freund was the fourth generation of his family to run the privately held family owned business since 1917.[4]

As the principal owner of Trinity Sports Holdings, Freund's portfolio includes teams in Major League Baseball, Minor League Baseball (including the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds), and two professional soccer clubs; Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club in East London, England and Memphis 901 Football Club in downtown Memphis, TN.[5][6]

As owner of Trinity Sports Holdings, Freund’s company was named Ballpark Digest’s Sports Organization of the Year in 2017.[7]

Freund purchased a 70% stake of the Redbirds April 1, 2016. Craig Unger, the General Manager of the Redbirds since April 2014, was promoted to President and General Manager under Freund. Unger would later join him in a consortium to acquire clubs in various sports. [8] Freund would become responsible for the major rebranding and uniform redesign of the Redbirds, discarding the birds on the bat across the front. [9][10]Freund is also the President of the Redbirds Community Fund, an organization which supports the Memphis RBI program (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities). [11]

In May of 2018, Freund was reportedly interested in purchasing the English Football League Championship club Aston Villa for £75m from chairman Tony Xia. [12][13] Freund has publicly denied any interest acquiring the club. [14] Media outlets reported that he had no interest in purchasing the club as of July 2018. [15]

Freund purchase a 58% majority stake of English fifth-tier outfit Dagenham & Redbridge F.C. in September of 2018 along with his seven-person consortium, including Craig Unger and former Everton and Manchester United goalkeeper, Tim Howard. Howard worked with Freund previously to launch Memphis 901 F.C. [16] [17] Dagenham & Redbridge was struggling prior to the takeover due to being relegated to non-league ranks and the club’s former custodian, Glyn Hopkin, choosing to cease funding and resigning as the club’s director in February of 2018. [18][19]

Aside from his position as the Principal Owner of Trinity Sports Holdings, Peter sits on the board of both the Pacific Coast and New York-Penn professional baseball leagues, and the United Soccer League, where he is a member of their respective executive committees.[20]

Personal Life[edit]

Since 2013, Freund has served as the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Rippowam Cisqua School, a co-educational independent day school for grades pre-kindergarten through nine. [21]

Peter resides in Bedford, NY[22]
