Peter Chung (Korean name: Moon Hyun) (born October 1, 1928) is a Korean-American business magnate and philanthropist. He is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he holds the position of Chief Executive officer and Chairman of Primacorp Ventures, a private conglomerate that is active in 5 divisions including education, real estate, and senior living facilities as well as CEO of the Coram Deo Foundation and Joe’s Table Cafe.

Early life and education[edit]

Chung's parents immigrated from Korea to the United States when he was 14 years old. His father was a pastor at a small Korean church in Los Angeles and the family struggled to make a new life for themselves in LA, with his mother working long hours in a sewing factory. After high school, he went to study mathematics and computer science at UCLA where he received his B.Sc. He went on to do his graduate studies in Business Management and Engineering at Pepperdine. He later completed the Executive Program for Growing Companies at Stanford Graduate School of Business. In addition, he is also a graduate of the Owner/President Management program at Harvard Business school.[citation needed]

Career[edit]

Chung holds the position of Chairman at Primacorp Ventures in Canada, a large conglomerate that operates primarily in North America. Primacorp Ventures specializes in many different industries, including real estate, education, healthcare, senior living facilities and technology.

Philanthropy[edit]

Chung attributes his charitable values to his Christian faith.[1] He has quoted King Solomon, “Do good while you are living, this will bring you happiness.”[2] He and his wife founded the Coram Deo Foundation and Joe’s Table Cafe.

In 2013, he received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award by Barack Obama in recognition of his outstanding impact through volunteering his resources to the community.

In 2012, he was awarded the Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada. The medal serves to recognize Canadians who have made significant contributions to Canadian society.[3]

He holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his contributions to human welfare and humanitarian work from the BrierCrest family of schools in 2003.

Chung is a well-known philanthropist. In December 2019, he donated $1 million to Surrey Memorial Hospital’s Foundation,[4] towards redesign of the paediatric oncology department at the Children's Health Centre. In 2021, he made a $250,000 donation to the Vancouver General Hospital’s epilepsy fellowship, to advance epilepsy research and care in BC.[5]

Personal Life[edit]

Chung met and married Stephanie (Korean name: Sungja) while on a trip to Korea. She was a music student and a pianist. They had five children.
