Peter Dasent
Peter Dasent is a New Zealand-born composer, pianist and songwriter who has lived and worked in Sydney, Australia since 1981. He played keyboards in the bands Spats, and The Crocodiles. He leads the chamber-jazz group the Umbrellas,[1] is writing a book on the music of Nino Rota and currently works in music composition for film and television, most notably in the children's television series Play School.[2]
Some of his more famous works were with Peter Jackson in three of his early films: Meet the Feebles (1989), Braindead (1992) and Heavenly Creatures (1994).[3]
He also composed the music for three other movies: Channelling Baby (2000), Cubbyhouse (2001), and Voodoo Lagoon (2006), plus some music for TV series and documentaries.[4][5]
Dasent has over thirty years’ experience as a composer and a songwriter for film and television.
His first film score was for Peter Jackson, the Muppets' send-up Meet the Feebles (1989). He also scored Jackson's Braindead (aka Deadalive) and the Oscar-nominated 1994 feature Heavenly Creatures.
For television he has concentrated mainly on documentaries and children's drama and animation, mostly for pre-school ages. The latter include the animated series Zigby, and music for Sesame Street (2003) and Bananas In Pajamas (2006–2008). Peter has been the musical director and pianist for ABC-TV's Playschool for eighteen years. If you have your own pre-schoolers you can hear him play every day on the show, which includes a daily story where he improvises the piano score in one take.
