Peter Manu

Peter Manu (b. May 11,1947) is an American internal medicine specialist, medical teacher and clinical researcher. He is Professor of Medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and the Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Therapeutics.

Education[edit]

Peter Manu graduated in 1970 with an MD degree from the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania. He was an intern and resident at the University-affiliated hospitals in Bucharest (1970-1975). He also completed a residency in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian/Queens (1977-1980). He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1980.

Academic Career[edit]

Peter Manu taught as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York, Upstate College of Medicine in Syracuse (1980-1983). He then moved to the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in the rank of Assistant Professor (1983-1989) and later Associate Professor (1990-1993). In 1994 he was appointed Associate Professor and promoted to Professor of Clinical Medicine in 2000 at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.  He joined the Hofstra University faculty as Professor of Medicine in 2010.

Research Career[edit]

He studied catecholamines in acute myocardial infarction in the early 1970’s in Bucharest with Arthur Karassi and Constantin Gh. Dimitriu. In the early 1980’s he worked in Syracuse on clinical decision analysis with Lorne Runge and Sheldon E. Schwartz. In the late 1980s and in 1990s he focused on chronic fatigue with Dale A. Matthews and Thomas J. Lane at the University of Connecticut. In the 2000’s, while at Einstein and Hofstra, he contributed to well-known studies of the metabolic complications of antipsychotic drugs, in work done with Christoph U. Correll and John M. Kane.

Clinical Career [edit]

Peter Manu is considered an expert in the management of medical issues of patients with severe mental illnesses. He is the author of the chapter “Medical Consultation in Psychiatry” in the last 4 editions of the authoritative Cecil Textbook of Medicine (2008, 2012, 2016, 2020).
