Peter Robinson (linguist)

Peter Robinson is a British linguist and scholar of second language acquisition (SLA), currently a professor of Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition in the Department of English at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan. He is known for his research on the cognitive and psycholinguistic processes involved in second language learning.

He has edited and authored volumes including Handbook of Cognitive Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition and The Routledge Encyclopedia of Second Language Acquisition.

Education

Robinson completed his tertiary education in the United Kingdom and the United States. He earned a B.A. (Honours) in Modern English Studies (English Language and Linguistics) from the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology. He went on to receive an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of London Institute of Education, and later a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in 1994, where his dissertation investigated the learning of simple and complex second language rules under various instructional conditions. His doctoral committee was chaired by Richard Schmidt and included Dan Blaine, Robert Bley-Vroman, Craig Chaudron, and Gabriele Kasper. Throughout his graduate Ph.D. studies his academic advisor was Michael Long.

Academic career

Robinson joined Aoyama Gakuin University in 1996, where he was tenured upon appointment and has served first as an associate professor and, since 1999, as a full professor in linguistics and second language acquisition. He has taught a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses including first and second language acquisition theory, psycholinguistics, human communication, and the analysis of second language speech and writing.

Prior to his appointment at Aoyama Gakuin, Robinson taught applied linguistics and SLA at the Universities of Pittsburgh, Hawaiʻi, and Queensland, and served as a Visiting Teaching Fellow at RELC in Singapore. He has also been a Visiting Professor at various universities worldwide.

In recognition of his contributions to SLA research, Robinson was named an Inaugural Fellow of the International Association of the Psychology of Language Learning (IAPLL).

He has served on editorial boards of major journals in SLA and linguistics and has organized and chaired panels at numerous international conferences. Robinson also leads workshops and seminar series, such as the “Second Language Acquisition Research” seminar series at Aoyama Gakuin University.

Research and Contributions

Robinson’s research is grounded in cognitive psychology, applied psycholinguistics, and theoretical SLA, focusing on how cognitive factors such as attention, memory, task complexity, and individual differences affect second language learning. He is best known for formulating influential theoretical frameworks such as the Cognition Hypothesis, the Aptitude-Complex/ Ability Differentiation Hypothesis, the SSARC model of task sequencing and the Fundamental Similarity Hypothesis, which explore how task design and learner cognitive capacity interact to influence language development.

His work has been widely cited and published in journals including Applied Linguistics, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Language Learning, TESOL Quarterly, and the Journal of Pragmatics.

Robinson has also contributed edited and authored volumes that are widely used in SLA research and instruction including  Handbook of Cognitive Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition (co-edited with Nick C. Ellis), which integrates cognitive linguistic perspectives with SLA research and instruction. The Routledge Encyclopedia of Second Language Acquisition, a comprehensive reference work covering major constructs, theories, and methodologies in SLA. He also edited collections such as Individual Differences and Instructed Language Learning and Second Language Task Complexity, which explore cognitive and instructional variables in SLA.

Robinson’s empirical research includes experimental studies on how adults learn second language rules under implicit, incidental, and instructed conditions, examining generalizability and automaticity of learning; studies of the effects of individual differences in working memory, aptitude and intelligence on second language acquisition; as well as studies of how task complexity and task sequencing influence second language production and learning.
