Peter Sie
Peter Sie (born Sie Tiam Ie; 28 December 1929, Bogor, West Java - 1 April 2011, Jakarta) was one of the pioneers of fashion design in Indonesia.[1]
Learning to sew from an early age, Sie began when he was just five years old. He later travelled to Vakschool Voor Kleermaker & Coupeuse in the Netherlands to study to become a tailor between 1947–1953. Notable clients of Sie include the government and the Sukarno family. His career came to a peak during the 1970s and 1980s, after which he came to be known as the first haute couture designer in Indonesia. His outfits and designs were frequently photographed for leading Indonesian magazines.
Sie retired in the late 1980s, but in 2001 he held a fashion show of his collections and published his autobiography, which was titled "Mode Adalah Hidupku" (Fashion is My Life), at the same time.
Private life[edit]
Peter Sie was the first and the most detailed haute couture designer of his time in Indonesia, even hosting a show at the Imperial House in the Sukarno era. He went through a crisis in 1974.
He was the youngest child of 7 siblings including Sie Tjeng Hay, owner of a food company in Bogor.
