Pfaffenberg is a Cadastral community and a dispersed settlement in the market town of Obervellach in Austria.
Cadastral community Pfaffenberg
The Cadastral community Pfaffenberg is the largest in terms of area within the market municipality of Obervellach and occupies the entire eastern part of the municipal area. The cadastral community includes the villages of Kaponig, Pfaffenberg, Stallhofen, Leutschach, Untergratschach, Obergratschach and Stampf.
Village Pfaffenberg
The village of Pfaffenberg is a dispersed settlement with 63 inhabitants and 33 buildings on the south-west mountain slope of the same name above the Möll Valley, in which agriculture (predominantly cattle and sheep husbandry) is still practiced. There is a farm cooperative neighborhood in Pfaffenberg, several transport/goods route communities, a power station community and a folklore association called “Die Pfaffenberg”.
The Tauern railway runs about 5 km along the Pfaffenberg. With several engineering structures, the route over the Pfaffenberg is one of the most interesting of railway construction. Since the double-track expansion of the Tauern railway track, the appearance of the Pfaffenberg has been shaped, among other things, by the Falkenstein Bridge.
The biggest social event on the Pfaffenberg is the Pfaffenberger Kirchtag on the second Sunday in October every year at the local St John's church.
The castle ruins Oberfalkenstein and Falkenstein castle are also located on the Pfaffenberg.
The Pfaffenberger Almen with the Pfaffenberg lakes were incorporated into the Hohe Tauern National Park in 2005. The Triestenspitze with 2930 m and the Gröneck with 2691 m rise above Pfaffenberg, peaks of the Reisseck Group in the Hohen Tauern.
