Phat Bollard

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Phat Bollard were a busking folk band from Cornwall, UK.[1] They formed in 2010 and split up in 2018. They released five albums of original music and gained UK national attention during the 2015 general election with their song Millionaires which criticises big business and people's attitudes towards the homeless. It was widely shared on social media from a post originating from a Jennifer Saunders fan page [2] and the band featured on a BBC News item [3] [4]. A YouTube video of them performing for this article has 400,000 views [5].

Their music is present on Bandcamp[6], SoundCloud [7] and Vimeo [8]

Band members

The band has changed personnel a few times, when they split the line up was:

  • Pat - Guitar
  • Adam - Guitar
  • Aaron - Mandolin
  • Brian - Cajon / Percussion
  • Ash - Banjo
  • Irie - Tea Chest Bass
  • Fergus - Occasional Backing Vocals

Musical style

Their songs are acoustic and can be described as being in the folk / skiffle genre. Most are fast with a dancey groove with guitar / mandolin / banjo riffs and layers of vocals. They have the occasional song with piano. The subject matter is often observational about social injustice but topics do include love, sex, fairies and cheese. They typically have a humorous element and swearing is very prominent in some songs.

Performance

The band regularly toured the country in their vans busking at various town spots [9] . Earning money from hat donations and CD sales. They also performed at pubs [10] [11] , clubs, festivals [12] [13] [14] [15] [16], charity / awareness events [17] [18], lifts [19] and have records from their homes & vans [20] .

Street performances have been regularly captured on YouTube and they did a recording session in Bahrain [21] . An argument with security guards trying to move them on while busking in Manchester has been seen over 900,000 times on YouTube [22].
