Phem (stylized in all lowercase) is an alt-pop singer and songwriter best known for their collaborations with artists like Machine Gun Kelly and G-Eazy, as well as writing songs for Jxdn and The Used. Based in Los Angeles, California, both of Phem's parents were musicians and encouraged them to play piano and drums from a young age. [1] They have described their songwriting as "as truthful as possible," often touching on mental health and sexuality. [2]

Phem is an openly queer artist, telling Billboard in 2018 that they "don't identify with anything in particular."[3] In 2020, they began using both she/her and they/them pronouns.

In addition to making music, they regularly stream on Twitch to connect with fans. [4] They use their Discord server as another way to connect with listeners, hosting movie nights and merchandise giveaways. [5]

Early life[edit]

Phem's parents were musicians and encouraged her interest in music from a young age. She began playing piano and drums before venturing into songwriting to express her feelings.[6] She started out playing jazz but was interested in other genres as well.[7] As described in their song "Sorry Mama," a collaboration with Machine Gun Kelly, they attended Catholic school throughout their adolescence.

Career[edit]

Phem's musical debut came with her feature on G-Eazy's 2017 song "Just Friends."

Phem told NME about their frequent collaborations:

{{blockquote|"I couldn’t give two shits about who makes the song, it’s just about how good it is, and if I can contribute in a way that makes it better."[8]

Personal life[edit]

Phem uses both she/her and they/them pronouns. They identify as sexually queer and opened up to Kerrang! about coming out to their mom:

"It really, really hurt her – it was a year of her crying, and saying, ‘No this is not you, you gotta think about this…’ And it was painful. It really hurt me, because you always want your parents to love you no matter what and be accepting of you. It was the first time in my life where I had to decide if I wanted to live my life the way that my mother wanted me to live it or myself. I still feel a little sad about that, but we’re cool now and I know she’s very proud of me."[9]

In 2020, Phem started dating American actor Tyler Posey. The two collaborated on his debut single "Shut Up" and he inspired her song "Silly Putty." [10]
