Royal Marines, Strike Fighter Pilot born in Dublin, 2 May 1971. Colonel Philip M Kelly [1] [2] is best known for being the first Royal Marines Fighter Pilot since 1960, with General Sir Peter Whiteley [3] being one of the other most renowned and successful Fighter Pilots in the history of the Royal Marines.


Kelly joined the Royal Marines in 1994 [4] where he served on Operations in Northern Ireland with 40 Commando until 1996 where he entered Pilot Training with the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm. Kelly was selected for Fixed-Wing training at the first stage in 1997. Qualifying as a Strike Fighter Pilot in 2001, Kelly flew the Sea Harrier FA2 with 801 Naval Air Squadron and the Harrier GR7/9A with 1 (Fighter) Squadron. Through 2001 to 2004 Kelly flew the Sea Harrier FA2 from the Invincible Class Aircraft Carriers and from 2004 - 2008 Kelly flew the Harrier GR7 on Operations including Herrick [5] and Enduring Freedom from Kandahar, Afghanistan.


Kelly was appointed the Strike Warfare Commander in 2015 for the UK Carrier Strike Group [6] and is currently the Chief of Staff for the Carrier Enabled Power Projection Programme [7] within the Ministry of Defence.
