Huckin was interested in drawing and painting from a young age.   He was fortunate to live near the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and was therefore able to spend time there, not only in the galleries but he also acquired access to prints and drawings not on public view.

Following completion of an Art and Design Foundation year at Oxford Polytechnic, he became an undergraduate at the University College of Wales Aberystwyth, gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art and History in 1975.

Huckin then completed a post-graduate Art and Design teacher training course at the University of Sussex before taking up his first teaching post in Hertfordshire in 1976.

During his 33 years in secondary education at various English schools where he taught Art and Design, he managed departments and faculties; directed the curriculum as a Deputy Head Teacher; delivered teacher training; wrote and edited national training materials in Art and Design; and worked as an Education Adviser.   Huckin continued to draw and paint whenever possible, in the firm belief that teachers, through their own personal practice, should stay connected with the subject that brought them into education.

After retirement he relocated to West Wales where he once again became a student at the University of Aberystwyth, gaining a master’s degree in Fine Art in 2012, in which he focused on Welsh Landscape. Huckin was awarded a university scholarship funded by the AHRC (Arts and Humanity Research Council), in order to support his master's course.

Throughout his residency in Wales Huckin has been learning and using the Welsh language.

Reflections[edit]

A personal quote from Huckin's 2019 collaborative publication Ysbryd Ystrad Fflur: The Spirit of Strata Florida

"My work has continued to focus on the Ceredigion landscape, and the opportunity to cooperate with Cyril, David and Rhiannon, during our outings and conversations, has enriched my understanding of it.

The Abaty Ystrad Fflur site and the surrounding landscape has been a source of inspiration, with its rich mixture of architectural and natural forms. The creative interplay between insightful poetry, deep cultural knowledge and expert archaeological interpretation has enhanced my ability to interpret the landscape and my ability to derive and evolve visual imagery from it.

It is the artist's imprint, the creation of mood and a desire to go beyond the immediate, that has resonated with others in the creative process."
