Phoenixx Co. Ltd.(株式会社フィーニックス)is a Japanese video game publishing company. Based in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, the company specializes in sales of indie games.

It came about as a result of the indies game label UNTIES.

Overview[edit]

Phoenixx was founded by Kazunori Sakamoto, who had previously been in charge of Sony Music Entertainment Japan (SME)'s indies game label UNTIES. When UNTIES, which was founded in October 2017, was dropped by SME Group due to the balance with its other game-related businesses.[1]、Sakamoto, who was in charge, created the new company Phoenixx in October 2019, inheriting it[1].Almost all staff of UNTIES moved to Phoenixx[1]; Phoenixx also took over several titles that had been signed to UNTIES. [1] Also continuing from the UNTIES era were the policies of coming from the viewpoint of the convenience of creators, that releases must be multi-platform, and to offer global support[1]. It also managed game creators[2] Furthermore, on June 25, 2020, a capital and business alliance was formed with Bandai Namco Entertainment, along with Dentsu.[3]

UNTIES[edit]

UNTIES was founded in October 2017 as an indies game label under the umbrella of Sony Music Entertainment Japan (SME) . SME had been involved in the game publishing business during the PlayStation (PS1) era, but distanced itself from games for some time after that.[4] UNTIES project leader Kazunori Sakamoto had been working in SME's music label division[5].

Although the business was a part of the Sony Group, there were no hardware barriers - it also released titles outside of the PlayStation series of consoles[5][1]. JYUNYA, representative of AQUA STYLE, which had released games under the labell, said in regards to UNTIES, "While it was inside of the big company, it felt like a resistance group where we acted on free will" and that, while "it was ridiculously fun!", it lacked the speed of a major company[1].
