The Phospholipid Research Center (PRC) is a German non-profit association based in Heidelberg. As a scientifically independent institution, the PRC promotes research into phospholipids for use in pharmaceutical applications. The PRC facilitates research projects at German, European and non-European universities and pays special attention to young scientists and interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers.
The Phospholipid Research Center does not pursue commercial interests but aims to broaden the basis for the use of phospholipids in pharmaceutical preparations.
History
The Phospholipid Research Center was founded in 2006 by international scientists in the field of phospholipid research.[1] The goals were and are to promote the use of phospholipids in drug formulation and to provide scientific and practical information on phospholipids to interested scientists in academia and industry.
Grants
To date, 90 scientific projects with a total funding volume of more than 10 million euros (as of December 2020) have been funded around the topic of phospholipids.[2] In this context, the PRC aims to promote phospholipids, on the one hand, as excipients to improve the availability and tolerability of drugs and, on the other hand, as active ingredients in oral, topical, pulmonary, and parenteral systems.

- Scientific workshops and symposia
In addition, the PRC awards poster prizes for outstanding poster presentations at the Phospholipid Symposium and the Thudichum Grant Awards.
Organization
The Phospholipid Research Center awards grants for research projects twice a year. The decision on the proposed research projects is made by the Scientific Advisory Council of the Phospholipid Research Center. Currently, the Council includes ten international scientists from various fields in phospholipid research.[4]
Phospholipid Symposium
Since 2009, the Phospholipid Research Center has organized a biennial Phospholipid Symposium called International Symposium on Phospholipids in Pharmaceutical Research. At this international symposium, the project partners funded by the PRC discuss current research and developments in the field of phospholipids with scientists from industry and academia. The symposium will take place in Heidelberg in September.
Awards
In addition to project funding, the Phospholipid Research Center also awards various sponsorship prizes. These are awarded at the Phospholipid Symposium. These include the Thudichum Awards, named after the German physician, physiologist, and biochemist Johann Ludwig Wilhelm Thudichum.[5]
- Thudichum Young Scientist Award – this award honors young scientists for an outstanding publication focusing on recent contributions to phospholipid research. The Young Scientist Award has been granted since 2015. The awardees were:
- 2015: Margaret Nancy Holme (London)
- 2017: Tom van Rooij (Rotterdam)
- 2019: Philipp Uhl (Heidelberg) and Dominik Witzigmann (Vancouver)
- Thudichum Life Award – this award honors scientists who have made excellent contributions to the study of phospholipids and have made significant discoveries for the scientific community about the use of phospholipids in relation to their properties. The Life Award has been offered since 2017. The awardees were:
- 2017: Daan Crommelin (Utrecht)
- 2019: Yechezkel (Chezy) Barenholz (Jerusalem)
