Photograph magazine is a fine-art photography publication based in New York City. Founded in 1988, the magazine originally existed as a printed gallery guide and is now a digital publication.[1]
History[edit]
photograph began in 1988 under the title Photography in New York, as a guide to exhibitions, auctions, and other art events. Bill Mindlin, the founder of photograph along with Ava Swartz, was working at the Marcuse Pfeifer Gallery at the time.[2] Visitors to the gallery often asked about nearby photography exhibitions, so Mindlin created a list of suggested shows using a mimeograph, and thus the publication was born.[3] The photography guide was published every other month, and was made available in bookstores and photography galleries. The publication offered listings of exhibitions in major U.S. cities, but focused specifically on the metropolitan New York area.[4] The guide included maps, listings of openings, calendars of future auctions and lists of photography bookstores.[5][6]
In 2008 the publication expanded to include a website, a weekly newsletter, and a social media presence during the wake of the Great Recession. In 2021 the magazine shifted to a fully digital publication. Bill Mindlin remained publisher and editor of photograph until his retirement in 2016. School of Visual Arts alum Anthony Beale was subsequently named publisher, and Jean Dykstra was named editor.[7][8] Archives of Photography in New York are part of the Colin de Land and Pat Hearn Library Collection at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, the New York Public Library, the Museum of Modern Art, the Yale University Library, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.[9]
In March of 2010 photograph published its first supplement, photographNYC, as a guide to the Armory show, the Art Dealers Association of America fair, The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) show, and other concurrent photography events that year.[10] Today the magazine continues to provide gallery guidance for photography shows in both New York City and across the state, and is known for its small, portable size.[11] photograph also currently publishes a weekly e-newsletter detailing photography openings and events, as well as reviews, news, and profiles.
