Photographers Without Borders

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Photographers Without Borders (PWB) is a community of storytellers empowering grassroots organizations worldwide through using visual storytelling in the form of photography and videography to amplify the voices and work of grassroots organizations and NGO’s worldwide.

Overview

Photographers Without Borders (PWB) connects volunteer photographers and videographers to document grassroots initiatives, NGO’s and nonprofits as part of the PWB Program. The requirements for PWB to partner with a nonprofit is that they must be in need; and they must be addressing the interconnected problems faced on this planet as outlined by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Photographers and videographers document the frontline work that these various organizations are involved with, and provides these organizations with that footage that can be used to expand their own capacity and bring awareness to the work taking place. In turn, PWB also raises awareness about these organizations through an online magazine, a bi-annual print magazine, and a video series that’s available on YouTube and Vimeo.

PWB was established as a registered not-for-profit organization in Canada by Danielle Da Silva in 2009, and as a 501(3)c not-for-profit organization in the United States of America by Phil Spitze in 2006, but now operates as a single agency with headquarters in Toronto, Canada, with Danielle Da Silva as the CEO, overseen by a Board of Directors in the United States, and Canada.

PWB  Program

PWB matches photographers and videographers who sign up as members to NGO’s, and acts as a liaison to facilitate the project for both the NGO, and the photographer. The NGO is able to use these photographs to expand their own capacity using the footage as a fundraising tool.

Over 175 projects have been undertaken and completed in over 35 countries around the world since the PWB program started in 2013.[1]

PWB Schools and Journeys

PWB also offers photography masterclasses for photographers at all levels. These workshops take place in partnership with NGO’s all over the world, as well as partnered with G Adventures. PWB Workshops have been taught by internationally acclaimed photographers, such as Brian Hodges, Dave Coulson, Jeffrey Garriock, and PWB’s CEO Danielle Da Silva.

PWB Journeys is meant to be a self-led PWB “experience” with influencers and leaders facilitating the trip with friends, family, and colleagues, travelling and discussing photography and leadership development skills.

PWB Magazine

PWB has a bi-annual print magazine released in April and October every year, featuring stories and photos from the most recent projects that have taken place. The magazine also has a photo contest open to the public and anyone to submit. PWB Has released ten issues of its magazine, with Issue #11 scheduled to release in October 2018.

PWB TV

PWB produces short, 10-20 minute long documentaries that highlight an NGO or grassroots organization, told through the eyes of the photographer who documented the project. These episodes are educational, highlighting the issues affecting the community, and the work being done on the frontlines by the NGO featured in each episode. PWB has produced two seasons of it’s TV series, with Season 3 scheduled to premiere in October. PWB TV episodes have won numerous awards and have been featured in film festivals all over the world.[2][3]
