Noel Limbani Chikoleka (born on December 18, 1986), famously known by his moniker Phyzix, is a Malawian rapper, songwriter, record producer, banker, marketer, activist, philanthropist and entrepreneur....[1] Born and raised in Area 12 of Lilongwe, Malawi, Phyzix began his music career when he moved to Area 25 where the rapper battled with fitting into the ghetto way of living in the area as opposed to the suburbs he grew up in. [2]
As an attempt to express his emotions through his music, Phyzix ended up making his breakthrough song at the age of 20; Cholapitsa. [3] The song received substantial airplay – making the name ‘Phyzix’ one of the most talked about acts at the time – as the ‘pioneers of the hip hop genre in Malawi’ debates began. Subsequently, Phyzix released a mixtape titled The Overdue in his breakthrough year – with Cholapitsa as the lead single for the mixtape. In the following two years, Phyzix released Black Stars Don’t Shine Mixtape (2007) and From the Dust Mixtape (2008).
He released his debut album The Lone Ranger in 2009 which was followed by Secret Service LP (2010). The Cholapitsa hit maker then went on to release Follow the Leader (2011) as his third studio album. He then took a sabbatical leave from music to focus on his education before making a comeback four years later. Phyzix has since released Gamba wa Suit Album (2015), Captain Long John Album (2016), a collaborative album with Barry One titled The Diaries (2018) [4] and Solid Album (2019) [1].
In 2020, Phyzix released what is dubbed the highest selling body of work in Malawi history; Gamba Season EP [2].[5] In 2021, Phyzix released his 14th album titled Flaws[6][3]. Outside of music however, Phyzix works in Private Banking at NBS Bank. He has been the Head of Marketing and Customer Experiemce as well as Marketing Manager for Opportunity International Bank of Malawi (OIBM). He has also been Marketing Manager for NBS Bank. Prior to that, he has also been an Investments Manager, Marketing Officer, and Customer Consultant (OIBM), a Salesclerk for Smallholder Farmers Fertilizer Revolving Fund of Malawi (SFFRFM), and Lead Medical Detailer for WomanCare Global, via Madison Holdings[7]. He is married to Ruth Kulaisi – Zodiak TV Presenter and together they have a daughter named Alyssa Grace. [8]
Phyzix continues to make music and serve his community as a member of Lions Club International[9] and as an activist; evidenced by his Mutipatsa? Campaign that saw him receive recognition from the Youth African Leaders Initiative (Yali) under United States of America Department of State Bureau of International Information Programmes[10] and the BBC.[11]
Early Life
Noel Chikoleka was born on December 18, 1986, in the capital city of Malawi, Lilongwe [12] – but originates from a royal family in Dowa and is in a lineage to the throne of being a chief in the district; T/A Msakambewa, Kapilingidza Village)[13] .
Born to Evelyn Josephine and Alec Jack Chikoleka; a retired banker and deceased diplomatic civil servant respectively; Phyzix grew up with 2 sisters, Elizabeth Sauka Makossah and Ewey Elsie Chikoleka and 2 brothers, late Austin Chikoleka and Alexander Tinga Chikoleka[14].
After being raised in Area 12, Lilongwe, predominantly by his mother after his father’s death in 1995,[15] the family moved to Area 25, Lilongwe, where the rapper’s life took a twist as his mother retired from the Reserve Bank of Malawi.[16]
Inevitably, Phyzix became a ghetto youth as he dealt with the dusty life of Area 25 where, 17 years of age at the time, he begun to face the struggles of a young man who was the second male born child of the family prior to the death of his older brother Austin in 1998[17] The ghetto life of Area 25 turned young Phyzix into a violent person as he was subjected to the bullying of the ghetto kids due to his suburb childhood[18]; as his counterparts basically saw him as a teenager with a well-to-do childhood who couldn’t affiliate with them. On a quest to earn respect and acceptance in dealing with ghetto politics, Phyzix subsequently engaged in physical fights in the area.[19]
Eventually, he resorted to music and sports as channels to express his emotions.[20] He focused on making music and participating in sports while avoiding indulging in bad behavior.[21] These are the stories shared in some of the following songs: Cholapitsa, Gamba, Chilombo, Abwana and Usodzi among others. As luck would have it, the rapper didn’t let the ghetto lifestyle bring him down but went on to score 11 points on his MSCE Certificate studied at Marist Secondary School.[22]
Education and Professional Life
Phyzix studied at Mphungu LEA School in Area 12, Lilongwe and Marist Secondary School in Dedza where he scored 11 points before proceeding to the University of Malawi, The Polytechnic, to study a Bachelor of Science in Engineering but later enrolled into Mzuzu University to study a Bachelor of Science in Information and Communication Technology.[23] Years later, the rapper studied for an associate degree in professional marketing, NVQ Level 4, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Strategic Marketing, NV1 Level 6, with the UK based Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). [24] Phyzix has also studied books that changed his life such as Napoleon Hill’s Law of Success, Think and Grow Rich, Robert T. Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad, Who Moved My Cheese, The Law of Attraction and countless books in similar subject matter. [25]
As of 2022, Noel boasts of nine years work experience that has seen him rising to the senior management level, majority of those being in the banking industry. Chikoleka is a Transactional Banker (Executive Banker/Private Banking) a Grade D2 – Middle Management Level) at NBS Bank. [26] He has been the Head of Marketing and Marketing Manager for Opportunity International Bank of Malawi (OIBM). He has also been Marketing Manager for NBS Bank.[27] Prior to that, he has also been an Investments Manager, Marketing Officer, and Customer Consultant (OIBM), a Salesclerk for Smallholder Farmers Fertilizer Revolving Fund of Malawi (SFFRFM), and Lead Medical Detailer (Consultant) for Woman Global Care, via Madison Holdings.[28] The rapper is also an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.[29]
Music Career
2006: The birth of Cholapitsa, making rapping in Chichewa and about the ghetto cool
The name ‘Phyzix,’ means an ‘Energetic’ rapper with dope lyrical content; ‘Matter’ which is derived from ‘Physics’ being the study of the relationship between Energy and Matter. [30] Phyzix released his first hit song titled Cholapitsa in 2006. The song received substantial radio plays[31], which saw the rapper perform at different shows locally before leading him to the famous rapper he is now with a career that has seen him collaborate with UK’s Sway of Konvict Music, UK’s Dekker and Johan (Radioclit), KonNd-1, Tapps Bandawe, Tay Grin, Theo Thomson, Hyphen, Lulu, Atumwi, Anne Matumbi, the DareDevilz, Third Eye, Dominant-1; and many more.[32] The song ‘Cholapitsa’ that was seen as merely a single back in 2006[33] as seen him live a rap career where he has shared a stage with Somalia’s gem; K’naan during the World Cup viewing, performed at the Lake of Stars International Music Festival, WAPi (Words and Pictures), Domestic Tourism Music festival, La fete de la musique (French Music festival) including a lot of shows in localities such as Karonga, Chitipa, Mzuzu, Zomba, Nkhatabay, Bunda, Salima, Mangochi and Blantyre. [34] Cholapitsa, as a song on its own, pioneered rapping about the ghetto and embracing an all-Chichewa rap style as he made it into ‘the list of hits of the decade’ and those who can recall how this song melted the airwaves and Variety-shows can agree[35]
2006: The Overdue Mixtape
In the same year he made a breakthrough in his rap career, Phyzix released a mixtape titled The Overdue – which had his hit single ‘Cholapitsa.’[36]
2007: Black Stars Don’t Shine Mixtape
In 2007, the rapper went on to release more music with his sophomore mixtape titled Black Stars Don’t Shine.[37]
2008: From the Dust Mixtape
In 2008, Phyzix released a 14-track mixtape that led to the rapper’s debut album the following year[38]
2009: The Lone Ranger Album
“I do me. My music is my personal identity,” Phyzix told Nyasatimes in an interview in 2017.[39] Evidenced by his debut album, Phyzix actually grew up believing the Lone Ranger Creed and he put it into practice by creating the image called Phyzix; meaning, according to the rapper, a type of rapper who unifies energy and matter when he writes music[40] .
It only makes sense that his first album had to be named after the fictional Lone Ranger that influenced him. The album was predominantly produced by KoNd-1 and the Dare Devilz who recorded all the songs – spawning singles such as Gamba, Jessie and Abwana [41].
2010: Secret Service LP
In 2010, Phyzix released Secret Service LP, his sophomore album whose concept was about working for the government just like secret agents. The album related the risks secret agents take with their lives to the way urban artists in Malawi work overtime but don’t get paid enough. Secret Service LP had Zolapitsa (Cholapitsa remix) [42] and the album was produced by Tapps Bandawe, and the Dare Devilz .
In 2011, Phyzix released his third studio album called Follow the Leader which had a smash hit that was titled after the album name. The album was craftly produced by Snowky Kachimanga and Q Malawezi[43].
2011: Even the greats fall…the sabbatical leave
The release of Follow the Leader saw Phyzix hang his microphone and leave the studio for a long 4 years [44]. Seeing the music industry in Malawi as an underpaid field, Phyzix used the 4 year period as a time to study marketing, sales and entrepreneurship [45].
2015: The Comeback | Gamba wa Suit Album
2015 saw Phyzix come back to the music scene with a 7-track album (his fourth)[46] which featured artists like Gwamba, Martse, Janta, Krazie G, Lady Pace; and more. In a 2015 interview [47] with Nation Online, the rapper expressed how he believed he was matured enough [for his comeback]; hence, the album on the cards was about his growth both as an individual and as a musician [48] . He described the “Gamba wa suit” album as a story of a polished hustler (i.e. Gamba) with the same drive and passion for success[49]. “Gamba wa suit has interests and respect for God, life, law and order, education, culture, politics, entrepreneurship, relationship management, peace, sales, marketing, hit records, collaborations, events, fashion, good health, happiness and a position of power in music and entertainment,” revealed Phyzix during the interview with Nation Online[50] . The rapper further described the album as a well-balanced individual in the tripartite nature of man or body, mind and soul. He added: “This album is a celebration of life. It is about following one’s bliss.” [51]
The comeback after a 4-year sabbatical leave was backed by what the rapper believed was a great demand shown from people to see him performing live as well as have his music in videos[52]. “I am not only going for the hit records, but I am also going for control in music and entertainment. My fans have been loyal to me from day one and I will reciprocate the loyalty. My new music is enjoying massive support. People have embraced the new brand of Phyzix and so I will give them more,” he expressed in the interview[53].
2015: Gamba wa suit to Gamba wa Yesu
After releasing his fourth studio album, Phyzix dedicated his life to God[54] and it seemed as if he became a gospel rapper as he released his first gospel song titled ‘Chitsanzo’ [55] in November of 2015. However, it later dawned on the rapper that teaching God’s word through his music was not his calling. He later reverted to making music for entertainment as a Christian regardless [56] 2015 also saw the rebrand of the Cholapitsa rapper’s entertainment company from Bantu Records to ‘It’s Only Entertainment (IOE)[57]’ .
2016: Captain Long John Album
In 2016, Phyzix had found love and was getting married to Ruth Kulaisi – Zodiak TV Presenter and Producer [58]. As a result, Phyzix made a special song ‘Dekha’ for his wife to be. As such, Phyzix went on to make more heartfelt love songs as opposed to his earlier Cholapitsa hardcore rap style. Subsequently, these love songs birthed the rapper’s 5th studio album; Captain Long John. [59]
2017: The Singles Year
In 2017, a married Phyzix released singles only as a compilation under the name Captain Bae which was later marketed as an Extended Playlist[60] . Some of the songs include KOTG (King of The Ghetto), Noni Noni , Golide, Patelera , Zibwente, and Captain Bae; music videos were produced for all these songs[61]. In the same year, Phyzix was featured in various chart toppers such as Sober by Martse [62] , Ghetto Sisunga Kape by Charisma, and Ndampezera Wina by Mafo.
2018: The Diaries (collaborative Album with Barry One)
In 2018, Phyzix released a joint album with fellow veteran rapper Barry One called The Diaries[63]; a critically acclaimed album that spawned such singles as Zimandiwawa and Wine with Nepman, among the 14 tracks the album had. Among other artists seen featured on the album were GD, Bossaro Cyclone, Waxy Kay and also the Na Lero star Nepman[64].
In the series of interviews the two had concerning about their joint album, it was revealed that the reason behind the album was to take listeners through the twos artistry lives, achievements and failures they have had in their music careers[65].
“The reason for the joint album is mainly to give people what they did not expect and even satisfy the speculation of those that thought of the idea of the two artists to team up.” explained Barry Uno in one of the interviews in March 2018 [66].
Concurring with his counterpart, Phyzix added saying, “We are fans of each other’s work. We are good friends. We represent the two major cities in Malawi. We come from the same generation of Hip Hop. We are at a similar stage in life and it feels right.”
The two artists are considered as some of the HipHop heavyweights the industry has. Both have been in the game for several years and somehow helped to shape the urban part of music in the country.
Their masterpiece had been done under the production of seven producers with GD and Tricky Beats being as main producers[67].
2018: Balaka Festival, hosted by Phyzix’s Record Label
In 2018, It’s Only Entertainment (IOE) Management, an entertainment outfit (owned by Phyzix) that aims at nurturing young talent and build the Malawian showbiz industry, launched talent identification competition, Balaka Got Talent, that ran for five months seeing the winner walk away with MK300, 000.00[68]. The initial launch was attended at least 500 people and started with 25 contestants.
2018: Mutipatsa? Song: Birth of a youth governance campaign
In late 2018, as Malawi was heading towards its sixth tripartite elections that were to be held early 2019, Phyzix released Mutipatsa? [69], a song that was aimed to inspire young Malawians to vote wisely during the 2019 May 21 Tripartite Elections [70], which basically means “are you going to give us?” The song birthed an activism campaign for the rapper – demanding presidential candidates to outline what they will provide for the youth to cater for all the challenges that young people face in the country and demanding young Malawians to take control and know that the power is in them to elect a leader that will make a difference in Malawi[71].
2019: Mutipatsa? Gets Positive Response from Malawi’s Second Lady
In 2019, the Mutipatsa? Campaign got attention from the country’s second lady, Mary Chilima, wife to Malawi’s Vice President, Saulos Chilima [72] who responded through a song titled ‘Tikupatsani’ [73]. In her rapping, Chilima also responded to those who, at the time, were calling for the vice president’s resignation on the grounds that he opposed the ruling party [74]. Her raps said the vice president’s resignation could be detrimental to the country as there would be nobody to expose the rampant corruption at Capital Hill [75]. The Tikupatsani song mainly dwelled on what was enshrined in the United Transformation Movement’s manifesto.
2019: Yali Recognition
2019 also saw Phyzix get recognition by the Youth African Leaders Initiative (Yali) under United States of America Department of State Bureau of International Information Programmes [76]. The recognition was based on the ‘Mutipatsa?’ song which Phyzix released ahead of the May 21 2019 elections.
A publication on the Yali website[77] under headline: “There is a hip-hop movement starting in Malawi. Here is why it matters to the 2019 elections,” describes how Phyzix is using his music to address the country’s social issues and the role of young people in addressing such issues. Phyzix told the publication that, “I am using my music to endorse a political party but to stand for the youth. I want to give them a voice; I want them to say, this is what we want”[78].
The musician described the recognition as an honour saying it shows Yali recognised his contribution towards the 2019 elections on behalf of the youth of Malawi [79].
2019: BBC Feature
In 2019, around July, Phyzix had a feature on BBC [80] where he talked about the Mutipatsa? song and campaign. “The question is going to the leaders of Malawi, are you going to give us?” Phyzix told BBC . On top of talking about how he fell in love with the hip hop genre and an advice to people going through struggles, the rapper also expressed how the youth in Malawi face unemployment, insecurity and how girls in Malawi are failing to go to school because they can’t afford sanitary pads [81]
2019: Solid Album
On 28 July, 2019, Phyzix launched his sixth studio album as a solo artist at Zingwangwa Secondary School Ground in Blantyre[82]. 13 years in the game at the time, Phyzix had established his consistency and thus acclaimed a solid career. The solid album has 11 songs [83] which includes ‘Yeye’ and ‘Ghetto Gospel’; a mixture of trap, traditional and dance music. “It’s a three-dimension album. It carries various topics for the mind and soul. There is always hope at the end of the tunnel. In it you will also find love messages,” Phyzix explained to the Times Group in an interview [84] leading up to the release of the album.
Phyzix also launched the Solid Album in Manchester, United Kingdom, alongside Kell Kay and Vita Chirwa at an action packed Malawi music concert [85].
2020: Gamba Season EP – Record Breaking Sales
In 2020, Phyzix dropped a 9-track Extended Playlist, Gamba Season[86] , with a leading single titled Makofi (featuring the DareDevilz) [87] . However, for the first time in his career, Phyzix decided to sell his music at K1, 000.00 per EP. To his surprise, people started buying the EP at a higher price – an initiative endorsed by fellow rapper Gwamba who paid K50, 000.00 to pre-order the EP and was followed by Fredokiss and other well-wishers. In less than a month, the EP had made at least K2, 000, 000.00 (adding all the figures the rapper had been posting on his Facebook page) and thus became the most selling music project in Malawi through pre-orders[88] . The EP has 9 songs and it has appearances from Jolly Bro (JB), Dictator, Dare Devilz, Blakjak, just to name a few [89]
2021: Flaws Album – MASO Awards Best Album 2021
In 2021, Phyzix announced the release of his 14th album titled Flaws. He said the title of album has three meanings which are : Flows of Phyzix ( Raps), Flaws of Phyzix ( Mistakes) , and Fourteen Laws of Phyzix ( Principles).
‘It is an album that showcases mistakes or weaknesses or blemishes common to humans and how most of us deal with them. It’s an album that has super rap styles. And finally I get to share the 14 principles of life that I live by. And encouraging you to have your own set of principles as a form of accountability and pulse check.’ [90]

Activism
Phyzix is more than just a music man. He is also a social human being. He has been playing pivotal roles in reaching out to various Malawian youths and has also been lending a helping hand to various communities in different noble causes.
Some of the community responses Phyzix has been involved in are:
- #Mutipatsa? Campaign - The #Mutipatsa? Campaign revolves around Youth, Women and major issues of national interest that need to be included and addressed in the political agenda towards the 2019 Malawi Tripartite Elections by the aspiring leaders together with their political parties[132]– as well as beyond the elections, to hold leaders accountable for their commitments. He was motivated by the change he would like to see in his community and he also feels he has a responsibility as a musician to send across positive messages to the people not just to entertain but to educate and make a social impact.
- Baylor College of Medicine (Children’s Foundation Malawi) – Free musical performance and motivational speech to children living with HIV
- Umodzi, and Ndife Amodzi Floods Response – Free musical performance to raise funds for flood victims. The flooding in Malawi killed more than 176 people, displaced at least 200,000 others, left homes and schools submerged in water and roads washed away by the deluge,
- MBC TV’s Reach Out and Touch – Free performances and role modeling to raise funds for people in need of medical attention from international facilities,
- Go Green Malawi Project (British Council) – Go Green Malawi was a multimedia project aimed at sensitizing the youth on climate change issues via music and other arts. The project was being implemented under the British Council with support from other development partners. Free music performances and being ambassador for Go Green initiative, Malawi AIDS Counselling and Resource Organization (MACRO) – Helped disseminate information on HIV/AIDS through music and role modelling.[133]
- Phyzix and IOE condemned the increase in rape related cases against women in Malawi. [134]
- Phyzix and Youth for Change (Y4C) donated exercise books, ball pens and pencils approximately to 200,000 to over 200 students at Mzamba Catholic Primary School in Blantyre in a bid to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on quality education for all. [135]
- Phyzix in conjunction with Galaxy Pharmaceuticals donated three boxes of blood collection tube and laundry soap all worth MK600 000 to support Mangochi District Hospital.[136]
Controversies
Polytechnic Withdrawal[137]
Before becoming the successful marketer he is, Phyzix went through failure once at the Polytechnic while studying Engineering as he was withdrawn from the college on academic grounds.
Feud with Jolly Bro and Fredokiss[138]
In 2010, after releasing his sophomore album Secret Service LP, Phyzix got involved in a high profile music beef with Jolly Bro and Fredokiss. The beef ignited after Phyzix declared to ‘deal’ with anyone who incites beef in Malawi music industry as he would like to see musicians work together to develop the industry. This did not go well with artists like Fredokiss and Jolly Bro who responded in a song and Phyzix retaliated.
Christian Rapper Not Doing Gospel[139]
In 2015, Phyzix decided to go back to making music for entertainment right after dedicating his life to God (and after releasing his first gospel song), Phyzix realized that spreading God’s word through his music was not his calling. However, Phyzix claimed to still be a Christian rapper who simply wasn’t rapping about the gospel. This caused a lot of uproar from fans and commentators alike.
“Undeserved” MUMA Award[140]
When the Music Malawi (Muma) 2nd Annual Awards nominees were announced in 2015, the public and the media responded differently and others were not happy with the list that included rapper Phyzix, who was nominated for “Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist”.
Some fans and the media were not amused with the rapper’s nomination, claiming he has been inactive in the game, though, in the previous year, he had released a seven-track EP “Gamba wa Suit” with hit singles such as “Mwachibwana” featuring R&B singer Eddie.
He commented: “I was shocked when I read an article in one of the papers, which I feel was not well researched,” responded the rapper when asked on what he thought about the critics.
“I released great music in 2014, like the household song ‘Mwachibwana’, which is a definite hit song. In fact all of the tracks from the ‘Gamba wa Suit’ album got thousands of downloads on Malawi’s number one music website Malawi-Music.com and they are enjoying good radio play and club spins,” he defended himself.
The rapper, born Noel Chikoleka, expressed disbelief that people could not acknowledge his hard work in the Malawi music industry.
He went on to say that though he had a full time job, with other businesses and school to focus on, he still makes music because it is my passion.
“These days I only record a few songs that will make an impact, a few collaborations with the right people, a few shows that are major such as the Cassper Nyovest show which is the biggest show as of late.
“I am climbing up the corporate ladder as a professional so I don’t have time to be at every show or record a lot of songs. Plus I’m no longer all over the place. That was Gamba. But Gamba wa Suit is classy and reserved,” he said.
Added Phyzix: “I made a successful comeback in the history of Malawi Hip-Hop, my comeback has been stronger than I was originally, which is a hard thing to do. Very few people come back better. Hip-Hop is very competitive, so I feel that I deserve both the nomination and to win the award.
“I am very confident that I will win. The world loves me. I connect with people. But otherwise win or lose, my mother told me I am a great musician and the nomination itself speaks volumes and it is well deserved.”
Phyzix said during the time that critics say he was inactive; he was contracted by one of the commercial banks in the country to compose and perform a theme song at various events.
“Apart from that, I am working with a youth empowerment organization on a project for orphans and refugees. I am also negotiating record deals with a number of labels, what record label will sign an inactive artist? He questioned.
“I am part of the A-Team and been making appearances at all shows involving the crew which comprises of Gwamba, Phyzix, Third Eye, Krazie-G, Martse, Dali, Blaze, Mwanache, Ben Sam, Sagonjah and AK.”
Makofi, Fredokiss Beef
In January 2020, Phyzix released a song whose artwork had an illustration of himself slapping a person whose illustration looked to mimic Fredokiss[141]. Additionally, the song, which addresses Malawians using social media to diss the Cholapitsa hit maker, came a few weeks after Fredokiss wrote on twitter “kodi Fizesi wa ma Dudutcha uja olo award simunampatse kujijilika konsekuja? Nsambi guys amatelo? Ndakutsikani,”[https://twitter.com/FredokissK/status/1206132287622057984]. A tweet many believed was directed at Phyzix – hence the concept of the Makofi song. However, Phyzix refuted the claims that Makofi is a diss song[142]
