Picture Performance Index (PPI)

Picture Performance Index is abbreviated PPI (disambiguation: the PPI they are referencing is not Pixels Per Inch, but Picture Performance Index, so a different matter and it is not related at all with Pixels Per Inch or PPI). Picture Performance Index is a scale made and used by different TV producers such TLC/Thomson, Philips, JVC. The meaning is different from one producer to another.

  • TLC/Thomson says [1]Picture Performance Index (PPI) allows to evaluate picture quality by taking into consideration key elements :  resolution, contrast, colour gamut, motion and screen type.
  • Philips says [2] (The article is applicable to all TVs from 2015 onwards) A dedicated index was developed for Philips TV models to measure the complete picture quality, called the Picture Performance Index (PPI). A PPI score combines display technology and advanced Philips video processing techniques to improve the quality of each picture frame. The higher the PPI score, the better the picture performance is. The frame rate capacity of the TV panel and picture quality of the picture display are communicated through a score on the Picture Performance Index (PPI). The term Hertz (Hz) is not mentioned in the specifications of the TV. The display capacity of frames per second (Hertz) that can be shown on a TV screen, influences the picture quality. To measure the total performance of the TV’s picture display, the shown frames per second and additional picture enhancement features of the TV are taken into account.
  • JVC says [3] The Picture Performance Index (PPI) is used by JVC to communicate about the fluidity of some TVs. The value of the index, provided by the brand, is notably related to the response time of the moving image ( MPRT ). By comparing the value of the PPI of the different models of the brand it is possible to identify the TV JVC offering the best fluidity of display.
