"If people define me as altruist and supportive I own these characteristics to my family". Pierluigi was raise by his parents and grandparents (Luigi, Florinda, Antonio & Maria) in the maritime city of Scauri until the age of 6 when the family decided to move to Latina for working reason. In Latina, Pierluigi had to adapt to the new city, bigger than his previous little village, but most importantly to the new elementary school, where he did not know anyone. At the beginning, making friends in the new environment it was not easy. "In Scauri, I was used to go by walk to the neighbour house when I wanted to play with my friends while in Latina my mom was very much more concerned to let me out of the house without her supervision". Eventually, when he left Latina he was very popular among his peers.

To follow a career in Business and specifically in Finance, at the age of 18, Pierluigi left Latina to study in the near by metropolitan city of Rome. After passing the admission test in August, Pierluigi was admitted in 2013 at the University of Rome - Tor Vergata in the bachelor of "Economics & Finance". After 3 intense years of projects, assignments and written and oral exams, Pierluigi got graduated in 2016 from his bachelor studies with a dissertation on "Hedge Accounting Standards IAS/IFRS". During the final dissertation there were family and friends attending the event and the following celebration. Because of his attentive participation in the university life, Pierluigi was offered the opportunity to sign for a research master in finance at the University of Rome - Tor Vergata with a scholarship to go for an exchange to Maastricht University in The Netherlands. Given the possibility to study in an ambitious foreign university as Maastricht University and having the eligibility criteria to follow the prestigious master of finance at Tor Vergata, Pierluigi decided to commit to study for the following 2 years between Rome and Maastricht. The majors of his studies included Credit Risk Models, Asset Management, Econometrics and Real Estate Valuations. In 2018, with a dissertation in "Long-Term Impact of Merger Synergies in the Healthcare Industry", Pierluigi got graduated from his master in finance owning the title of Doctor of Economy (Italian honor distinction).

Early Career[edit]

Throughout the summer 2018, Pierluigi was participating into interviews with banks and consultancy firms in Amsterdam with the intent to strike a contract and go back working in the place that once had warmed his heart: The Netherlands. Eventually, before the day of the graduation, Pierluigi received a contract from ING Bank in a position of Junior Analyst in their novel and fast growing team of Working Capital Solutions. As soon as the graduation ceremony was over, Pierluigi was on his flight to Amsterdam for an experience that would have forever changed his life.

As part of ING Transaction Services Sales team, Pierluigi was involved in the structuring and advisory operations concerning a broad range of large international clients with the goal of optimising company liquidity locked into working capital. In this role, he mainly fulfilled the following tasks:

  • Perform commercial analysis on clients and translate finding into recommendations for working capital optimisation and capital structure restructuring.
  • Device and present ING solutions to C-level internal and external executives.
  • Contribute to the business development of the product by preparing project proposal, intended to add 10% volumes to the size of our assets.
  • Facilitate working capital analysis and support the development of an automated portfolio monitoring file through excel based modelling.

Despite his good experience at ING, when it came the opportunity to switch from commercial banking into investment banking, Pierluigi was eager to embrace a new challenge. In May 2021 he signed a new contract with Amsterdam Trade Bank "ATB", (after renamed FIBR), a Dutch licensed bank, owned by Alfa Bank.

ATB/FIBR was a completely new reality, from the composition of the team to the organisational structure of all the bank. The bank was in a pivotal strategy intended to move away from trade and commodity and specialise in supporting the debt capital market of small and medium enterprises in the European geography.

The new scope of the bank was to provide senior funding through structured finance to EU Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) across a variety of products in the spectrum of debt capital market. Pierluigi joined as an associate, and he was called in by the manager to use his cross-domain expertise in finance and statistics on one side to derive performance analytics on the asset book up for financing and use his charismatic personality to run the relationship and lead the negotiation with clients on the other end. The role that he was covering entitled mainly the following tasks:

  • Support the development of internal commercial strategy using tool such as market analysis, customer & competitor research, macroeconomic forecasting, and portfolio optimisation.
  • Source and establish relationships with new clients, lead the negotiation of commercial terms and manage deal documents to identify critical commercial issue, which contributed for investment opportunities totalling 20% of the bank revenues.
  • Develop models for Cash Flow and Revenues projection, Budgeting, Risk-Weighted- Asset and Risk-Adjusted-Return for risk management and profitability monitoring
  • Assist and advise the curator in the process of restructuring and closure of the bank following bankruptcy.

The role ended at the end of the year 2022 with the default of the bank for KYC reason. Following the dramatic event, Pierluigi promptly decided to enrol at the University of Amsterdam to follow a master in Corporate Finance. "It is never to late to learn new skills"

Awards, Adventures and More[edit]

Throughout his career, Pierluigi has been collecting several additional experiences that enriched his cultural baggage and his curriculum. Worth of Notice:

  • Volunteer - teaching assistant- with Wep Human Project in Cape Town in 2014. Take Home:"giving is more satisfactory than receiving"!

Skills[edit]

Throughout his career, Pierluigi matured a combination of both hard and soft skills which enrich his professional and personal profile. While working in the department of Working Capital Solutions, Pierluigi came across a spectrum of products such as Supply Chain Finance, Receivable Financing or Trade finance deal, to manage and optimise working capital of large corporate. In the role of junior analyst, he was front line in building financial model for balance sheet analysis, writing credit risk proposal and preparing presentation for client pitch. "It was a very stimulating job where I refine my understanding of the capital structure of large corporate". The switch to investment banking was disruptive for his career. Joining a boutique bank as ATB/FIBR served to explore a different reality with different dynamics. In ATB/FIBR Pierluigi assumed a more entrepreneurial attitude in terms of building relationships with client and lead the transaction from start to end (including negotiation, structuring and legal review). When Pierluigi Joined ATB/FIBR, the bank, which had recently changed his management, was pivoting strategy and while wounding down its activities in the field of Trade Finance, it was building the Securitisation floor where Pierluigi was one of the main actor. The team was composed by the manager Matt Kus, and 2 other colleagues (Arman & Nursultan) and zero outstanding YTD. At the beginning, sourcing and establishing relationships with new clients was not easy but by the end of the year the team was able to close deals for more than €500 mln committed facilities and €325 mln of outstanding ones.

Languages[edit]

As per his social aspect, Pierluigi likes to connect with new people and whenever English is not sufficient to build a comfortable and intriguing conversation, he matured the interest to learn several Mediterranean languages in order to support his curiosity to attain a better and meaningful connection with the interlocutors regardless of potential language barriers that can arise between two people coming from different culture. "The Netherlands opened my eyes. While, until the age of 20 I could only communicate comfortably in my native language, now, embracing the multi-cultural city of Amsterdam, I am able to speak and understand at least 3 more".

While still working on his Dutch by following evening classes, Pierluigi feel confident in speaking English for working reason, Italian to communicate to the family (on a daily basis), and Spanish and French for vacation reason.
