Pietro Barabaschi (born 1965) is an Italian electromechanical engineer and international research administrator serving as the Director-General of the ITER Organization since October 2022.[1][2] He has spent much of his career in fusion research and has held senior roles at Fusion for Energy (F4E), the European agency responsible for the EU’s contribution to ITER and for the EU–Japan Broader Approach programmes.[3]
Early life and education
Barabaschi was born in Milan, Italy, in 1965, and studied electromechanical engineering at the University of Genoa, graduating in the late 1980s.[1]
Career
Joint European Torus (JET)
Shortly after graduation, Barabaschi joined the JET project at Culham, United Kingdom, working in the machine development department on what was then the world’s largest operating tokamak.[1] [4]
Early ITER roles (1993–2006)
In 1993, during ITER’s Engineering Design Activities, he joined the international team working across the Joint Work Sites in San Diego (USA), Naka (Japan) and later Garching/Munich (Germany).[1] In 2000, he was appointed Deputy to the ITER Project Leader and Head of the Engineering and Design Integration Unit/Division, positions focused on design integration for the device.[1]
Fusion for Energy (2006–2022)
In 2006, Barabaschi moved to Fusion for Energy (F4E), the EU’s domestic agency for ITER, where he held senior posts including Head of the Fusion Development Department and leadership of the European contributions to the Broader Approach projects in Japan—JT-60SA, IFMIF/EVEDA, and IFERC.[5][3] He also served as Acting Executive Director of F4E in 2014–2015 and again in 2022.[6][3]
Director‑General of ITER (2022–present)
Following the death of Director‑General Bernard Bigot in May 2022, the ITER Council selected Barabaschi as the next Director‑General in September 2022; he took office in October 2022.[7][2] As Director‑General, he has emphasized project management practices and integration between the central ITER Organization and the Domestic Agencies to advance construction, commissioning and the long‑term research programme.[3]
