Piino Massacre

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Piino Massacre, which occurred on July 19, 2023, was a part of a larger massacre that targeted the ethnic Anyuak community in the Itang, woreda and Abol Districts of Gambella regional state in Ethiopia. The violence was carried out by Ethnic Nuer militias from South Sudan, allegedly with the support of armed men belonging to SPLM-IO, a former rebel group in South Sudan. The tragic incident resulted in significant loss of life and has raised serious concerns about human rights violations and regional stability in the affected areas.[1]

Background[edit]

Following the outbreak of the Tigray War in November 2022 and the subsequent armed conflicts that occurred throughout the whole country, an armed group by the name of Gambella Liberation Front (GLF), mostly made up of ethnic Nuer community, alongside the Oromo Liberation Forces, attacked the city of Gambella in Gambella regional state of Ethiopia.[2] The Piino massacre can thus be understood through the wider context of the ''Gambella Conflict'' and ethno-linguistic conflicts that have been dominant in the region.[3]

Victims[edit]

According to the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, atrocities which constitute violations of human rights and acts of war crimes were committed against the inhabitants of Piino and the near villages. An un conservative estimate by VOA Amraric, puts the number of civilians killed at 29. In addition to that, the inhabitants of the village and other surrounding villages were displaced due to the incident.[4]
