Pijul is a distributed version-control system for tracking changes in files. Pijul is based on a mathematical theory of patches [3], guaranteeing properties on patch operations such as associativity, and the commutation of patches made independently[3]. Commutation is claimed to allow Pijul to scale to large repositories[4]
The project was started by Pierre-Étienne Meunier and Florent Becker in 2015[5], initially to work on the LaTeX sources of an academic paper[6]. The initial goal was to combine the ease of use and mathematical guarantees of Darcs, with the performance of other systems like Git and Mercurial[7]
