Pilis problem deals with the problematic questions of medieval Hungarian kingdom. The problem is about the real political and geographical centre of medieval Hungary, the research focusing on the territory around the Pilis mountains.[1][2]

The origin of the name Pilis

The Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit was founded in the early Middle Ages and its hermits inhabited the mountains. The proponents of the topic state that the name of the area comes from the name of the Order, while the official view holds a Slavic origin more credible.

Disputed areas within the mountain range

Disputed towns around

The problem lies in the disputed origin of the main Hungarian towns. The researchers of Pilis state that originally these centres were scattered around the mountain range and the huge forests coined with the medieval term Pilis. Also the ancient fortress of Buda and Esztergom were here, just as the other historical towns of Visegrád, Veszprém and Székesfehérvár.

The - mainly amateur - researchers of the topic state that the mountains of Pilis have a higher energy and have somewhat sacral significance that, together with the huge flow Duna, was the basis of the Hungarian kingdom. The official historiography does not accept their claims.

The most significant researchers

The most important researcher of the topic was Sashegyi Sándor. Nowadays mainly amateurs deal with the questions, sometimes they try to carry out private archeological excavations on the area. A few of them are Aradi Attila, Dettre Lajos, Bradák Károly, Szántai Lajos and Szörényi Levente, musician.
