Pinheiro Neto Advogados is a Brazillian law firm headquartered in São Paulo and founded in 1942 by José Martins Pinheiro Neto. Specialized in business and corporate law, with over 103 partners and 329 associate attorneys, the firm is one of the largest in Latin America, being renowned for its high profile litigation and mergers & acquisitions work.[1] [2]As of 2022, it has offices in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Palo Alto, California, and in Tokyo, Japan.
History[edit]
It was founded by José Martins Pinheiro Neto, a Brazillian lawyer and journalist known for covering the Second World War in London, as a foreign correspondent at BBC. The firm began with Pinheiro Neto himself, a secretary and a clerk. In 1961, the firm moved to BankBoston's building in street Libero Badaró, 486, São Paulo. In 1987, J.M Pinheiro Neto received the title of "KBE" - Knight of the British Empire - from Queen Elizabeth II[3], owing to his previous work at BBC and as the head of the British Chamber of Commerce. In 2006, the firm moved to its current facilities in the headquarters of the extinct Santos Bank.
At the time of Pinheiro Neto's death, in 2005, the firm had grown to be one of the largest in Latin America, with over 1,100 employees, including 300 lawyers, 191 interns, 144 paralegals and over 20,000 lawsuits under its responsibility, divided in four sections: corporate and business law, litigation, tax and labour law.[4]
Several key figures of the Brazillian political, legal and business environments were Pinheiro Neto alumni, such as Fernão Bracher, former chairman of the Central Bank of Brazil and Luiz Otávio Magalhães, founder of global private equity firm Patria Investiments. Among the firm's high profile cases were the renegotiation of Brazil's sovereign debt in the 1980s', the privatisation of Brazil's state-owned firms in the 1990s', the founding of Brazillian billionaire startup Nubank, the mergers that originated LATAM Airlines Group, the first issuance of shares of a Brazillian company in the New York Stock Exchange, the negotiation of a multibillion-dollar loan to the country's electrical sector as to prevent blackouts in 2020[5][6] and negotiating the Pfizer vaccines on the company's behalf with the Brazillian government amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.[7][8]
