Piotr Kardas
Piotr Kardas is a Polish lawyer. He is the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Palestra journal published by the Polish Bar Council,[1] advocate, vice president of the Polish Bar Council[1], professor of law, [2]
He is Head of the Department of Comparative Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University, Alexander von Humboldt fellow, Max Planck Society fellow, member of the Law Committee of the Polish Academy of Learning, member of the Criminal Law Scientific Society, member of the Law Committee of the Cracow division of the Polish Academy of Sciences, chairman of the OBA Scientific Council, head of the Polish delegation to the CCBE. Member of the Social Codification Committee. [3] Professor Kardas combines his academic activities with the practical pursuit of the advocate profession. He is a Managing Partner at a boutique, specialist law firm based in Kraków, Poland.
Biography
He graduated from law school at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1990; obtained a doctoral degree in 1996 and a post-doctoral degree in 2001. [2]
Professional Career
In 1992, Professor Kardas completed his judicial traineeship in Cracow. In 1994, he passed the attorney-at-law exam and was admitted to the bar of attorneys-at-law. Since 2002, he is also an active member of the Cracow bar of advocates. In 1993 – 1998, he was a member of the Cracow Local Government Appeal Court. In 1994 – 1997, he served as a secretary of the Criminal Law Reform Committee at the Polish Ministry of Justice. In 1994 – 1998, he clerked at the Polish Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw. Furthermore, he was a member of the Minister of Justice’s committee, established to prepare draft amendments to the Criminal Code of 1997. In 1999 – 2000, he served as an expert with a Sejm Committee for Amendment to the Law (Criminal Code), the role of which is providing professional opinion on bills presented to the Polish Parliament. In 2001, he was appointed as an expert to the Presidential Committee for Criminal Law Revision chaired by professor A. Wąsek. In 2004, he served as an expert to the Parliamentary Committee for Penal Fiscal Law Revision. Since 2005, he is an arbiter at the Arbitration Court of the Polish Chamber of Commerce. [3] In 2008 – 2012, he served as an arbiter at the Arbitration Tribunal for Sports with the Polish Olympic Committee in Warsaw and in 2012 – 2017 he was a member of the Program Council of the National School of Judiciary and Public Prosecution. He is an active member of the Polish Bar Council since 2010. In 2010 – 2016, he served as the chair of the Legislative Committee and vice president of the Ethics Committee of the Polish Bar Council.[2] In 2015 – 2018, he was vice president of the Editorial Board of the „Palestra” and since 2018 he serves as its president. [2] He is a member of the Academic Board Scientific Council of the "Comparative Law Review". Since 2018, he is the head of the Polish delegation to the CCBE. Since 2017, he is a member of the Social Codification Committee.[1] He is one of the founding partners of „Kardas & Kardas”, a boutique Cracow-based law firm specializing in white-collar crime.[4]
Academic activity
He is a full professor of law since 2014.[5] [3]
He was assistant to professor J. Kruempelmann at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. As a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, he conducted academic research at the Max Planck Institute for International Criminal Law.
He is the author and co-author of 500 academic publications (published in Polish, German, English, Slovakian, Russian and Ukrainian),[4] including the following monographs:

Awards and achievements
In 2002, his dissertation „The theoretical foundations of criminal liability for co-perpetration” was awarded 1st place in the academic contest for a best post-doctoral thesis organized by „Państwo i Prawo”; In 2012, his book „Cumulative concurrence of legal provisions in criminal law. A theoretical analysis” was distinguished as the most practically useful monograph by „Przegląd Sądowy”; In 2013, he was awarded the Złote Paragrafy;
He was also awarded the Medal of Distinguished Member of the Bar („Adwokatura Zasłużonym”).[4]
