The Pittsburgh Knights are an American professional esports organization headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2017, the team fields athletes from around the world to compete in a variety of competitive video games, such as Rocket League, Madden, Rainbow Six Siege, SMITE, Gears of War, PUBG Mobile, Trackmania, and Apex Legends.

In December 2018, the Pittsburgh Steelers invested in and partnered with the Knights.[1]. This was followed by partnerships with Wiz Khalifa [2], Evgeni Malkin [3]), and MX Latam, among others.

History[edit]

The organization officially launched in December 2017 with a PUBG team and a Super Smash Bros. player [4]. In March of 2018, the City of Pittsburgh presented a proclamation to the Knights recognizing them as an official team of the city and declaring March 13th Pittsburgh Esports Day [5].

President of the Pittsburgh Knights and co-founder James “Jame^s” O’Connor is a former professional Counter Strike player and United States Marine Corps Veteran who served in Iraq. He began playing Counter Strike when he suffered an injury on base in 20XX and, upon his honorable discharge from the military, became a sought-after CS instructor and coach [6]. He coached Team Liquid’s CS:GO team from 2015 to 2016 and led the team to their highest Majors tournament finish, at the time [7]. He was later brought on by Jonas Jerebko to launch the Detroit Renegades [8], of which O’Connor was a minority owner [7].

The Knight’s partnership with the Pittsburgh Steelers is unique in the world of esports, as the Steelers are active, supportive partners of the esports team [9]. The Knights are currently being incubated within the Steelers’ operation [10]
