The Pittsburgh Paints Company is an American manufacturer of paints, stains, and coatings headquartered in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. The company was formed in December 2024 following the acquisition of the U.S. and Canadian architectural coatings business of PPG Industries by American Industrial Partners (AIP), a private equity firm.[1][2][3]
History
The Pittsburgh Paints brand dates back to 1897, when it was established by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (now PPG Industries). Over time, the brand became associated with a range of residential and commercial paint products distributed throughout North America.
In October 2024, PPG Industries announced the sale of its U.S. and Canadian architectural coatings business to AIP for $550 million. The sale included a portfolio of consumer and contractor-facing brands, more than 750 retail stores, and shelf space in major home improvement retailers. The transaction closed in December 2024, resulting in the creation of The Pittsburgh Paints Company as a standalone entity.[4]
Operations
The Pittsburgh Paints Company manufactures and distributes a variety of architectural coatings, adhesives, caulks, and stains for professional contractors and retail consumers. The company's products are sold through independent dealers, its own retail locations, and major national retailers such as Home Depot, Walmart, Menards, and Lowe's. Most of the company's products are produced in their respective country of distribution.[5]
As of 2025, the company operates approximately 750 stores across the United States and Canada. It also serves as the distributor of PPG's Protective and Marine Coatings business within the region.[6]
