Plane & Pilot is a print and digital general aviation magazine published since 1965. It runs news, features, reviews of aircraft and aviation products, and articles on how to be a better pilot.[1] It is the only U.S. newsstand publication focused on light aviation.[2] Plane & Pilot is owned by digital media entrepreneur Craig Fuller, who also owns Flying magazine.[3]

History[edit]

Plane & Pilot magazine's first issue was in December 1965. It was the baby of Don Werner, a publishing executive already involved with other motorsport magazines. Werner created Plane & Pilot as an addition to his growing publishing empire.[4] By 1969 it was cited as "a widely circulated magazine in the field of aviation" by Senator Vance Hartke, who had an article on air traffic control read into the Congressional Record.[5]

Despite several changes in ownership, it's been published monthly for over 50 years, outlasting many other U.S. pilot magazines, including Air Progress, Airways, Popular Aviation, Private Pilot, Skyways, and Sport Pilot.[6] In 2012, it had a circulation of 150,000.[7]

In 2015, Madavor Media bought Plane & Pilot, installing as editor-in-chief former Flying magazine editor Isabel Goyer.[8] In 2023, Flying Media Group acquired Plane & Pilot, with the stated goal of having the publication focus on the piston aircraft market.[9]
