Planetronika is an animated pilot created by animator Rafael Andaya.
The pilot follows the two friends Butterfly (Bella Sapphire) and Freestyle (Itsbeeache) as they play basketball. Butterfly is a human space traveler while Freestyle is a green slime alien.[1] Their world is also occupied with small ball-shaped animals named Minimals.
Development
The show takes heavy inspiration from 2000s cartoons like Totally Spies!, Kim Possible and Winx Club. Rafael has stated that he has pulled from a lot of different inspirations when creating the show. Outside of the above named cartoons he also cite the Smile.dk's song Butterfly as the name sake behind the main character.[2] He has also stated that Freestyle is named after Bomfunk MC's song Freestyler[2]. The Minimals are inspired by the 2000s collectible toy's Gogo's Crazy Bones.[2]
Although the show clearly pulls a lot from older media the low resolution is stated to be due to a software glitch and was not intentional for the final release. [2]
The pilot was originally meant to be a 44 second gag short but during development it ballooned into an 7 minute and 30 second pilot.[2]
The main cast has gone through many design changes through out the development. While Butterfly generally has remained a human girl throughout development, Freestyle initially was meant to be a human, then a blue elf-ish alien, and finally the green slime alien from the final release.[2]
Reception
Planetronikas pilot, as of writing, has recieved over 3.7 million views on youtube with over 300 thousand likes.[1]
