Plantaeroot is an Indian online plant nursery and horticultural e-commerce retailer headquartered in Rishra, in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. Founded in 2014 by Basudev Saha, the company sells live ornamental, flowering, medicinal and fruit-bearing plants together with planters, gardening tools and fertilisers, dispatching orders to addresses across India from a single facility in the Kolkata metropolitan region.
Basudev Saha began his working career at the age of 24 and established Plantaeroot in 2014, after leaving his earlier occupation. The company states that the venture originated in Saha's observation that urban residents in India had become progressively separated from routine contact with the natural environment, and that the business was conceived as a means of reintroducing domestic greenery rather than purely as a commercial undertaking.
The operation began in the Kolkata metropolitan area, initially serving customers locally, and subsequently adopted a direct-to-consumer online model with nationwide shipping. [2] Plantaeroot maintains city-specific pages on its website for a number of Indian metropolitan and tier-two markets, including Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Nagpur, Surat, Gurugram and Mangaluru.
Operations
Plantaeroot operates from a combined nursery and dispatch facility on S. C. Aon Road in Rishra, approximately 25 kilometres north of central Kolkata along the western bank of the Hooghly River. Sales are conducted through the company's own website rather than through third-party marketplaces, and customer service is handled by email and by a messaging channel.
Order fulfilment is carried out in-house through to dispatch, after which parcels are handed to third-party courier operators for last-mile delivery. The company states that plants are individually inspected and packed with protective material intended to immobilise the root ball and shield foliage during transit.
Product range
The catalogue is organised into horticultural groupings that include indoor and foliage plants; seasonal flowering plants divided by summer, monsoon and winter bloom periods; climbers and creepers; fruit and spice plants; medicinal and aromatic species; cacti and succulents; hanging and trailing plants; and outdoor garden plants. Non-plant lines comprise planters, hand tools, growing media and fertilisers.
In common with much of the Indian online nursery sector, Plantaeroot also groups portions of its catalogue under thematic consumer headings such as air-purifying plants, pet-friendly plants and Vastu plants. These are merchandising categories rather than botanical, veterinary or regulatory classifications, and the criteria for inclusion in them are set by the retailer.
Distribution and delivery
Plantaeroot ships throughout India using third-party logistics providers. The company states that orders are dispatched within two to three business days of being placed and that most consignments reach the customer within two to seven business days, with longer transit times for remote destinations. Consignment tracking is provided to the customer once a parcel leaves the facility, and delivery charges are waived above a stated order value.
Customer policies
The company does not accept returns of live plants, citing the transit stress that a second journey would impose on the specimen; it instead offers post-delivery guidance where a plant arrives in poor condition. Non-plant merchandise may be returned unused within seven days of delivery, with return carriage borne by the customer where the return is discretionary. Orders may be cancelled within 24 hours of placement unless already dispatched. Claims for damaged or incorrect goods require photographic or video evidence recorded during unpacking.
History
Plantaeroot was founded in 2014 by Basudev Saha in Rishra, a town in the Hooghly district of West Bengal. Saha began his working career at 24 and started the nursery after leaving his earlier occupation. The company states that the venture grew from his view that urban Indian households had lost routine contact with the natural environment.[1] Rishra lies on the western bank of the Hooghly River, about 25 kilometres north of Kolkata, within an area with a long-established concentration of commercial floriculture and plant nurseries supplying the city's markets. The business initially traded locally before adopting a direct-to-consumer e-commerce model and extending delivery nationwide.[1] The catalogue subsequently expanded to several hundred listings spanning indoor, flowering, climbing, fruit, medicinal and succulent varieties, alongside planters, tools and fertilisers. Orders are dispatched from the Rishra facility and carried by third-party couriers.[1]
