Plastic Shed Base

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Plastic shed bases are a modern product which have been designed and developed to replace traditional concrete style bases for sheds, log cabins, greenhouses and other garden buildings. While shed bases have traditionally been constructed from either solid cast concrete or preformed concrete slabs, this technique is not without faults such as allowing or encouraging water to puddle beneath the shed bearers and can cause damage to wooden or metal sheds through rusting or rot. Concrete also has a much bigger ecological impact as many of the plastic shed base alternatives are manufactured from recycled plastics such as polyurethane or polypropylene.

The bases are usually modular in nature and are formed of interlocking panels which usually measure between 300-500mm square and around 30-50mm in depth, but can be attached to each other to create bases of practically any dimension. These plastic panels are often manufactured by injection moulding and feature varying cell designs, square, circular, hexagonal and asymmetric. The load bearing tolerance of plastic shed base panels varies quite significantly, from 50 tonnes per square metre up to 420 tonnes per square metre.[1]

With the open nature of the cellular designs of a plastic shed base panel, these are often in-filled with a decorative gravel for both strength and aesthetics. This also helps for water to permeate through the upper surface and prevents water from puddling beneath the substructure of the shed and protects against wood rot or degradation which can undermine the longevity of a garden building.

Plastic shed bases are regarded as the modern, ultra-lightweight[2] and more sustainable way of creating a reliable, stable foundation for garden buildings.
