Pocket of Lollipops
Pocket Of Lollipops are an American husband and wife rock duo[1] based out of Miami, Florida.[2] The band is composed of Maitejosune Urrechaga (vocals and bass guitar) and Tony Kapel (drums, and vocals). They formed in 2009 at Art & Culture Center of Hollywood during an impromptu music performance for the TM Sisters solo art exhibition. The duo explores a wide landscape of noise and noise-making techniques.[3] Their ethos is raw, unfiltered, and unabashedly honest. It has received attention from Vice, Tom Tom Magazine and NBC Miami[4]. The duo integrates elements of art rock, underground, experimental, and alternative music, drawing influence from avant-garde rock.[5] The sound has been coined 'posh punk' by Miami’s own Metro Zu.
The Miami New Times called drummer Tony Kapel a sun-bathed tropical version of the Renaissance man.[6] Nonetheless, their music has generally been characterized as adorably angst-y indie rock[7]. Having shared the stage with international touring acts such as Chai, Pussy Riot, Lydia Lunch, White Mystery, Dressy Bessy, they are no strangers to concerts, festivals and the unusual.[8]
On September 2021, the band released a live single from a 2011 recording of the Nirvana cover song Polly recorded for Beached Miami as a tribute to commemorate the 20th anniversary.
In 2019, their 6th release Be My Non Friend Friend features droning post-punk and a lo-fi setting of experimental noise, and the song “Lavender Carry” follows with fuzz, spacey sounds and changing tempos amid talking and singing.[9] While Pocket Of Lollipops success maintains a strong cult following[10] with not just the swampy south.[11].
In 2012 the music video for Posh Punk Birthday aired on Comcast local music channel. The band's discography consists of seven studio albums, and 14 music videos. Their first three albums MT Your Pockets, Vivid Reprise and Broken Balloon used low-fidelity sound and recordings. The next albums Letters to Larrup, Thanks Theo and Be My non friend friend pushed the duo to create the label Hounds Tooth Cottage[12] to release their albums and friends[13]. The album Be My non friend friend released in 2019 was released with a special edition fragrance named Cloak.[14] Their album, Tibruón, was released on May 13, 2021. It was recorded in South Florida during the Covid Pandemic and mastered in Chicago by Bob Weston.[15]
Since 2006, Tony has published 3 novels and Maite started a comic series Naninks & The Lady[16], both of their work has been exhibited in art galleries and art basel satellite events.
