Ponni M. Concessao is an Indian architect and urban planner based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Early life and education[edit]

Ponni M Concessao was born on 18th December, 1963 to Mr Mukundan and Mrs Rugmani Mukundan. Her great grandfather Dr C. S. Govindapillai was a medical doctor and a recipient of the prestigious Rao Bahadur award for exceptional medical services in India. Her father is a civil engineer and IRSE officer with the Indian Railways. Ponni used to visit different sites of her father’s infrastructure projects during her school days which gave her a great exposure to civil engineering and architecture.
Ponni was the first woman student to get admitted to the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli and also the first woman to win the distinguished alumni award from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli from the President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. She is married to fellow architect Oscar Concessao[1] from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli. Her educational stint in post graduate studies in Cornell University, New York, and Harvard University, Cambridge as well as work experience in Edward Barnes/John Lee Architects, New York City, USA was a turning point in her life as it had a significant impact in her career in India as an architect and social worker.

Works[edit]

Ponni professional work experience at Edward Barnes /John Lee Architects in New York City was an eye opening experience in international design and global business. Her personal interaction with Prof Joe Laquatra and Prof Sheila Danko of Cornell University and later with Architect Edward Barnes in New York City was pivotal in understanding design and India’s standing globally in the realm of architecture, heritage and international economic development. The American principles of design, equity in gender and business development has had an immense impact in her professional and social work in India. Ponni along with Oscar Concessao had done many notable projects such Telagana state secretariat[2], Kalaigner's Karuvoolam (Museum), Perasiriyar's Library, PMAY (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana) project & also designing the new Gaganyaan Space Center[3] for the Indian Space Research Organization, in Sriharikota

Telangana State Secretariat[edit]

Ponni along with Oscar Concessao are the architects for the one million sq.ft Telangana State Secretariat in Hyderabad, for the Government of Telangana which is designed to be covid-proofed[4] and environment friendly evoking the overall design philosophy and the exterior architectural character were fusion and synthesis of diverse cultures and heritage of dynamic history of Telangana[5]. The project was designed with lower ground, ground and 11 floors with a built up area of 64,989 sq.m [6]
