Dmitry Grigorievich Ponomarev (Russian: Дмитрий Григорьевич Пономарёв) (03 November 1908 – 26 December 1982) was a Soviet naval officer (submariner), participant of the Soviet–Japanese War of 1945. Hero of the Soviet Union.

Biography[edit]

He has graduated from the Arkhangelsk naval college (after named as Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy) in 1929. Started as sailing-master on merchant vessel.

On October 30, 1930, has been draft in Red Army and served as a Red Army man in the 32nd shooting regiment of Volga Military District.

On October 30, 1931, he was transferred to a reserve.

From October 13, 1933, to March 1935 he was a student of educational detachment of diving named by S.M.Kirov.

From March to April 1935 - assistant to the commander of submarine Shch-118, 5 sea tug of Pacific Fleet.

From April 1935 to August 1938 - the commander of submarine Shch-131, 5 ST of Pacific Fleet.

From August 1938 to July 29, 1939 - the commander of the 33rd division of submarines of 5 ST of Pacific Fleet.

From July 29 to November 1939 - the commander of the submarine Shch-120 of the 31st division of Pacific Fleet submarines.

From November 1939 to April 2, 1940 - chief of the 2nd department of the headquarters 5th Base of the Pacific Fleet submarines.[1]

Since April 2, 1940, he started to be the commander of the Petropavlovsk naval base of Pacific Fleet.

Participant of the Soviet-Japanese war of 1945. During Kuril amphibious operation the captain of 1 rank D.G. Ponomarev in short terms has prepared and in difficult weather conditions has accomplished transition by the sea, executed lading operation to fortified islands of Shumsha and Paramushir, which are strongly strengthened by the opponent, has organized neutralization of enemy strong points and weapon emplacements. For the successful realization of this operation by the fiat of September 14, 1945, to D.G. Ponomarev had given the rank of the Hero of the Soviet Union.

In 1946 D.G.Ponomarev has ended the academic courses.

Since 1954 — in reserve of army service. He lived in Leningrad.

He was awarded with the Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of Patriotic war of the 1st degree, two the Orderds of the Red Star and medals.
