The Bridge of Arches also called The Sovereign Bridge and Bridge of the Victory after the revolution , is a bridge in the city of Liège crossing the Meuse and connects with the center of the Outremeuse district in the direction of Aachen.[citation needed] The bridge was rebuilt over numerous times in the millennium. For a long time, the bridge was the only one in the city spanning across the Meuse river.[citation needed]

History[edit]

Sovereign Bridge[edit]

In 841, Bishop Hirclaire had ordered a solid bridge to be built, called the Sovereign Bridge. Possibly made of wood, it is claimed the bridge went as far as the foot of Mount Cornillon. The wooden bridge, often damaged by the transportation ice cubes, crossed the Meuse opposite and ended in Pêcheurs, called Pexheuere at the time[1].
