Pony (band)
Pony was an indie rock band active in New York City from 1993 to 1995.[citation needed] The three-piece band included Dallas Crowe (Andrew Gardner) on guitar and the majority of the vocals, Kitty Dubois (Miriam Maltagliati) on bass, and Jimmy James (James Murphy) on drums and some vocals.[citation needed] They released a double 7", two full-length LPs, and an additional 7" on Fire Records in the UK.[citation needed]
Their first release, a double 7" on the label Ah Um Fidelity, includes four tracks (Soft Johnny, Driving Miss Danger, Michael, and Chicago), and was recorded by Robert Weston IV at Plantain Studios in September 1993.[citation needed]
Their full-length album, entitled *Cosmovalidator*, was released on Homestead Records in 1994. The album was recorded in the band's studio, Plantain Studio, in DUMBO, New York City.[citation needed] The album included the tracks Driving Ms. Danger, Prizefighter, Michael, Grand Hotel, Electric Chair, Black Dragon, Fortune Cooke, and Gimme.[citation needed]
A second 7", including Prizefighter and the B-side Shockwave, was released by Fire Records in 1994.[citation needed]
A second full-length album, *El Dorado*, was released on Homestead Records in 1996, after the group had broken up.[citation needed] The album was recorded by the band and compiled by James Murphy.[citation needed] The album included the tracks Test, Shockwave, (), Deadbird Song #13, Furniture, (*2), Out On Friday Night, This Order, Robitussin, Mrz, Small Wives, Deadbird Son #6, Deadbird Song #5, Lean, Deadbird Song #11, (*1), Go, Hi-Tek, and Pack Your Bags, Motherfucker.[citation needed]
During its short lifespan, the band toured the entire United States once, made several shorter tours east of the Mississippi, and played SXSW twice. The band also contributed a live track to the Thread Waxing Space Live: The Presidential Compilation '93-'94.[citation needed][citation needed] After the demise of the band, James Murphy and Miriam Maltagliati formed Speedking with Chet Sherwood, resulting in four 7" singles.[1]
Andrew Gardner later became a professor at the University of Puget Sound;[citation needed] Miriam Maltagliati became an entrepreneur on New York's lower east side[citation needed] and James Murphy went on to found DFA Records.[2]
