Poolwerx is a pool and spa maintenance network and global franchise brand, operating in over 355 territories with more than 575 service vans across Australia, New Zealand and America. First launched in Australia in 1992[1], Poolwerx provides a variety of pool services, as well as construction and remodeling in some territories. Poolwerx also operates 160 retail stores, which offer pool supplies, chemicals, equipment and outdoor furniture. Select locations also offer hot tubs. Mobile units offer pool cleaning, filter cleaning, equipment replacement, safety inspections, and other routine maintenance, as well as providing free water testing[2]. Poolwerx caters to both commercial and residential clients.[3]
With more than 80 stores and 300 service vans located in Australia, Poolwerx comprises 10 percent of the nation’s pool and spa care professionals, making them the largest pool service company in Australia, and one of the largest in the world.[4] Expanding to the United States in 2015[5], Poolwerx USA now has 39 stores across 7 states in the Sunbelt region--Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Tennessee, Florida and South Carolina.
History
Poolwerx was founded in 1992[6] in Brisbane, Australia by CEO John O’Brien, a former chair of the World Franchise Council.[7] O’Brien initially started Poolwerx by acquiring a small local pool company with a half dozen service vans.[8] Poolwerx quickly grew soon after throughout Australia, and later, the United States, from a series of subsequent acquisitions, as well as small local pool businesses converting to the Poolwerx franchise. [9]
Poolwerx Movie Services
In 1994, Ian Jenkins, the owner of another pool service company that was later acquired by Poolwerx, bought an independent swimming pool mobile maintenance franchise before it was purchased by Poolwerx. About 10 years ago, Jenkins moved to a corporate role in the company, his business expanded to consult to production companies that use pools as part of the movie-making process.[10] Now called Poolwerx Movie Services[11], this division continues to work on TV series, commercials and major movie productions at Village Roadshow Studios, including Pirates of the Caribbean, Thor and Aquaman.[12] He is responsible for maintenance of three production tanks at the studios, the largest of which has a capacity of 7.2 million liters. [13]
Poolwerx USA
In March 2015, Poolwerx first launched Poolwerx USA by purchasing their first business in the United States, the assets of Phoenix-area pool and spa retailer Cactus Valley Pools, which had been in business 17 years.[14] This acquisition included Cactus Valley’s 16 stores and nine service trucks. This expansion to the United States has been a plan 22 years in the making, although it had been delayed due to the early 2000s recession.[15] Poolwerx used the summer after this acquisition to become acclimated, then began rolling out more deals across the Sunbelt.[16] Later that year in August 2015, Poolwerx also acquired Vivo Pools’ retail and residential servicing and maintenance divisions, with operations trading as SC Pool & Spa Works in California, Crystal Tech Pools in Arizona and Citrus Pool Services in Florida. This acquisition added 2 retail stores, a warehouse operation, and 40 more mobile service and maintenance units to the Poolwerx USA business.[17]
In June 2017, Poolwerx USA purchased the 50-year-old pool service and retail business Dolphin Pool Supply, the largest independent pool retailer in North Texas, which has generated more than $8 million in annual revenue.[18] They also announced the completion of a new 10,000-square-foot facility in Dallas, TX that serves as the company’s US headquarters and training center.[19] Poolwerx USA further expanded with several other franchise partnerships, including 40-year-old Pleasant Pools and Spas in Oklahoma City[20], Redlands Pool & Spa Center in California on July 2018[21], and 50-year-old Tucson-based Patio Pools and Spas in June 2019[22]. In five years, Poolwerx USA has expanded to a network of 39 retail stores and 209 service trucks across 7 states in the Sunbelt.[23]
Expansion Plan
Poolwerx has disclosed a plan to have more than 300 locations[24] and 620 service vans across America by 2024. Since entering the US in 2015, Poolwerx is also looking to expand into new parts of the world. In March 2019, the company signed a letter of intent to acquire a business in Europe with 105 stores.[25]

Charitable Partnerships
Poolwerx partners with the Australian organization Kids Alive[36], a community service organization and water safety campaign that educates the public on five important steps to reduce the risk of preschool drowning.[37] Poolwerx joined this organization in 2015, in partnership with former Australian Olympic swimming coach Laurie Lawrence.[38] Together they educate the public about proper pool safety in attempt to reduce the rate of child drownings in Australia.[39] In partnership with Kids Alive, Poolwerx launched Learn2Swim Week in Australia, a program that provides free swim lessons to community children across 355 swim schools across the country for one week each year.[40] Poolwerx also created the program April Pools Day, in partnership with the Australian Red Cross and Kids Alive, which provides free community access to online American Red Cross CPR courses.[41]
