Popee the Performer

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Popee the Performer (also known as Popee the Clown) was a children's cartoon created by Ryuji Masuda and Wakako Masuda that aired from 2001 to 2003 on Kid's Station and also became a manga later on. The cartoon ran from 2001 to 2003 and was 40 episodes; each episode is 4 minutes long. The show lasted 3 seasons with 39 episodes throughout plus a New Years Eve special. In 2002, a manga was made by Wakako Masuda that is 84 pages long. In 2017, Ryuji Masuda announced on Twitter that he'd be making a comic featuring an older version of Popee called Phaeton and Me.[1]

Plot[edit]

The show had no ongoing plot and each episode was usually about Popee attempting to do a circus related activity such as sword-swallowing or magic tricks, but it ends up going wrong resulting in over-the-top violence that was sometimes bloody. Characters die multiple times throughout the series, but they are still alive in the next episode. The setting is in a desert in a place called Wolf Circus for the entirety of the show.

Characters[edit]

Popee[edit]

Popee is a 17 year old American[2] boy who aspired to be a clown, but later on in life he leaves the circus to become a scientist.[3] He wears a pink and white striped onesie with a tail and a pink rabbit hat. He has blonde hair and in drawings depicted by Wakako Masuda, he has pigtails, but it's not visible because of his hat. Despite being violent towards Kedamono, he does not hate him. His father is Papi, he has a sister named Marfia, and the name of his mother is unknown.

Kedamono[edit]

Kedamono is a purple, wolf-like creature that always has his face covered by a white mask, and his face underneath resembles his mother's. Before living at Wolf Circus, he lived at a temple.[4] At some point after the events of the show, he has a son who is also named Kedamono.[5]

Papi[edit]

Papi is a man who wears a orange and yellow harlequin outfit and a sun headpiece. He also bald and has a handlebar mustache. He is the father of Popee and Marifa, though this is not outright stated in the show. Papi travels around a lot and wasn't there to raise Popee as a child, so instead he hired a nanny to take care of him.[6] After the events in the show in a comic written by Masuda Wako, Papi is tossed into a fire chamber to be fuel for a time machine constructed by Popee, causing his face to catch on fire.[7]

Alien[edit]

Alien is a stereotypical looking gray alien, who wears a shiny, skin tight, outfit with a brown belt and boots. He has a ship that looks like a flying saucer. He dislikes Popee and Kedamono, but seems to like Papi.

Frog[edit]

Frog is a small green frog, who has appeared in multiple episodes, and is the only character in the show who spoke.

Paola[edit]

Paola is a mix between an elephant and a car and belongs to Papi. Paola does not like Popee and she loves Kedamono. Despite having a mechanical body, she is able to eat food.

Mirror Popee[edit]

Mirror Popee (also called "Eepop" by fans) only appeared in episode 33. She looks like Popee, but is the opposite of him in terms of personality. Mirror Popee is very timid and is hurt by Mirror Kedamono. She wears a purple onesie, a bunny hat that is orange with yellow stars on it, and a white satchel.

Mirror Kedamono[edit]

Mirror Kedamono (also called "Onomadek" by fans) only appeared in episode 33. She is a pink wolf-like creature with pink and white striped shorts, and a white mask.

Marifa[edit]

Marifa is the younger sister of Popee and had not appeared in the show.[8] She wears a light green and pink dress, purple leggings, blue boots, blue gloves, and pink panda earmuffs. She is very mischievous, but she pretends not to be in front of Popee. Marifa is loved by Popee, but the relationship between her and other characters is not known.

Merchandise[edit]

There is a variety of Popee the Performer merchandise but they aren't easy to find. There are stuffed dolls, action figures, notebooks, sound mascots, bookmarks, bobble heads, slap bracelets, mouse pads, calendars, key chains, toasters, jewelry, watches, and shorts that look like Kedamono's.[9]
