Poppi (beverage)
Poppi, formerly known as Mother Beverage[1][2] is a Texas-based[3] non-alcoholic beverage brand producing prebiotic soda[4][5][6] infused with apple cider vinegar.[7][8][9][10][11]
History
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Poppi was co-founded by husband and wife Stephen and Allison Ellsworth[12][10][11] in 2017.[2][8][13][14][15] The couple devised the idea after Allison searched for a remedy for symptoms from a chronic health issue.[14][16][7][17][18][19]
In 2016, the couple began selling it at a local farmer's market in Dallas.[2][15][8] In 2018, the founders received a $400,000 Shark Tank investment for a 25 percent stake in Mother Beverage on episode 8 of season 10 with Shark Rohan Oza,[20] co-founder and managing partner of Cavu Consumer Partners.[1][7][8][12][21][22]
After getting the deal and discovering they could not trademark the word "mother," the company was rebranded as Poppi.[14][23] In 2020, Poppi expanded its distribution partnerships with Big Geyser in New York and Classic Beverage in Southern California.[24] The same year in March, Poppi officially launched[13] and began selling its prebiotic sodas on Amazon and Walmart.[25][26][8][17][27][12][28]
In 2022, the company appointed Chris Hall as its CEO, the former Chief Executive of the Sparkling Ice brand,[29] Chuck Czerkawski as CFO, who was formerly the CFO of Essentia, and Lana Buchanan as Chief Marketing Officer, who was vice president at Anheuser-Busch and Campari.[13] In 2022, Poppi secured a $25 million seed round for expansion.[30][10][11]
Overview
After Shark Tank investment, the company received venture funding from CAVU Ventures, Kylie Jenner,[31] Hailey Bieber[31] Kygo,[32][33] and Shay Mitchell.[34] In December 2022, Poppi received a $25 million seed round.[1][35]
The company has partnered with influencers Noah Beck and Bryce Hall.[36][37]
Poppi's 2020 product lineup included 12oz canned prebiotic sodas.[5][35] In 2021, the company launched a new line of traditional soda-inspired flavors, including Classic Cola,[26] Doc Pop,[22] and Root Beer.[22]
In February 2023, the flavor lineup was updated to a core selection of Strawberry Lemon,[38] which was ranked the top flavor by Tasting Table;[22] Raspberry Rose,[39][40] Ginger Lime,[41][42] Orange,[43] Watermelon, Cherry Limeade, Classic Cola,[38] Doc Pop, and Root Beer.[44]
Ingredients
Poppi contains natural prebiotics from unfiltered apple cider vinegar,[45] sparkling filtered water, fresh fruit juice, stevia, and organic cane sugar;[42] and uses real, clean ingredients, with each can containing 5 grams of sugar or less and 25 calories or less.[8][2][46][47]
Poppi is fat-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, and vegan.[48]
Nutritional Value
Poppi's apple cider vinegar contains the mother, a colony of beneficial bacteria that aids in supporting the gut and immune system.[2][49][47]
