History[edit]
Early history[edit]
The Port Stephens Cricket Club was established on 3 June 1986 at the Murre Golf Club in Raymond Terrace, a town in New South Wales, Australia. The club was founded at the inaugural meeting held by the founding members.
At the gathering, the members elected officials, agreed on club name and discussed preparation of the home ground. The attendants included Dennis Huckstadt, David Kedwell, and Mark Dean, who were respectively elected president, secretary, and treasurer. The club was officially named the Port Stephens Shire Council Cricket Club (P.SS.C.C.C).[1]
Cricket in the top grade[edit]
Though the Port Stephens Cricket Club lower grade had successes on numerous occasions, the successes could not measure up to those of the grade A team, known as the Pythons. Accordingly, the team has dominated the sport “over the past 35 years as one of the most professional and successful amateur sporting teams in the Newcastle and Hunter Region”.[2] The Pythons lost to Bowthome in the Grand Final. However, it turned its previous season win percentage of 39% into a respectable 73% with 14 wins from 19 matches. The Pythons had arrived and began leaving their mark on the competition.
In 2001-02, the Pythons signed two batsmen, Jarrod Moxey and David Robertson and with its established batsmen Brett Cox and Darren Morrison, the Pythons now had a top order that would meet any competitor. David was a destructive opening batsman, who in only his 4th innings at the club, sets the record for the Highest Individual score by a batsman with 175. Jarrod also proved pivotal in his debut season. The team went on to defeat the Tea Gardens/Karuah’s Brad Pinch in the 2001-02 Grand Final. But in the 2005-06 Season, the Pythons lost to the previously defeated Tea Gardens/Karuah. (The forming of the Port Stephens Cricket Club, Australia)
The 2007-08 season saw a completely different outfit turn out for the Pythons in A Grade. The only familiar face was that of Jaimes Magnee. This was by far the worst season played by the Pythons in an A Grade competition and marked the delineation between the Pioneer Generation and the current side to date.
The dawn of a dynasty[edit]
Having been comprehensively humiliated in the 07-08 Season, the Port Stephens Cricket Club looked at rebuilding their once dominant Pythons. President Stuart Ellis along with some previous A Grade players approached brothers Jarrod and Josh Moxey to help rekindle the spark in the Pythons' team. The brothers were well placed to put together a winning formula. The team regained its successful performance. The team was approached to enter into the District First Grade competition as a stand-alone competitor.
Capped players[edit]
To recognize the achievement of players selected in the Port Stephens Cricket Club 1st XI, the club introduced a capping system. Any player who played five matches in the A Grade team became a capped player upon commencement of their fifth match. The player is entitled to display their number on their cap.
The capping system was put in place to authenticate the achievement of playing at the highest level of One Day cricket in the Maitland and District Cricket Association competitions.
