Port of Ndayane
The Port of Ndayane is a deep-water port under construction in Ndayane, approximately 50 kilometers south of Dakar, Senegal. It is the largest infrastructure investment in Senegal's history and is expected to significantly enhance the country’s maritime and logistics capabilities upon completion. The port is being developed by DP World, a global port operator, in partnership with the Government of Senegal.[1]

History
The project was officially launched in December 2021, following a concession agreement signed between DP World and the Senegalese government. The goal of the project is to relieve congestion at the Port of Dakar and support the growing needs of Senegal's economy by developing a state-of-the-art facility capable of accommodating next-generation container vessels.[2] The first stone of the port was laid on January 3, 2022, by Senegalese President Macky Sall and DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.
Project description
The Port of Ndayane is designed as a greenfield development, with construction divided into multiple phases:
- Phase 1 involves the construction of a 300-meter quay and a 5-kilometer marine channel dredged to a depth of 18 meters. This phase also includes associated container yards and support infrastructure.
- Phase 2 will extend the quay by an additional 400 meters and further develop the port's capacity.
The total investment for the project is estimated at US$1.2 billion, making it one of the most ambitious port development projects in West Africa.[3]
Strategic importance
Located along the Atlantic coast, the Port of Ndayane is positioned to become a key maritime hub for West and Central Africa. It is expected to boost regional trade, attract new investments, and contribute to job creation. The port will be connected to road and rail infrastructure to facilitate cargo movement to and from the hinterland.[4]
Operator
The port is being developed and will be operated by DP World Dakar, a subsidiary of DP World. The company has been present in Senegal since 2008, operating the container terminal at the Port of Dakar.
