The Port of Ortona (Italian: Porto di Ortona) is a commercial port of Ortona, situated in Abruzzo, Italy.
Services
The port has a wide range of services including: cargo service, national bonded warehouses, national and international shipments, fire services, electricity, slipway, cranes, travel lifts, engine repairs, slipway and electrical repairs. It also has areas reserved for pleasure craft, where boats can moor at the seasonal piers. The management office structure is made up of the Port Authority, a Maritime District Office and a Customs Office.
Technical characteristics
The port of Ortona has 5 piers:
- North pier, 457 m long, has approximately 55,000 m2 of storage area and a seabed depth of approximately 6.80m.
- Hammer pier, 130 m long, the depth of the seabed is about 5.70 m.
- Shore wharf, 236 m long, has approximately 24,000 m2 of storage surface and a depth of seabed of approximately 5.70 m.
- Riva Nuova pier, 260 m long, has approximately 25,000 m2 of storage surface and a seabed depth of approximately 5.70 m.
- Commercial wharf, 200 m long and a depth of seabed of approximately 5.70 m.
Expansion and modernization works
On 30 January 2007 an agreement was signed between the Minister of Infrastructure and the Abruzzo region, which included several modernization and expansion works of the port for a final cost of 60 million Euros; specifically, the following interventions should be carried out:[1][2]
- Interventions to deepen seabeds
- Consolidation and construction of new docks
- Construction of structures for port activities
- Improvement and modernization of the internal railway line
- Construction of new port squares
- Improvement of traffic
Access
The port is also served by a railway link used for freight traffic which connects it with the Ortona railway station[3].
