The Portal for Social Impact of Scientific Research in/on the Arab World (Athar) “Athar” is an open repository which benchmarks the whole life cycle of research including knowledge transfer and public or policy-oriented research activities. It targets research in and on the Arab World. The platform can be used to share papers, monitor their social impact, and follow the research in a particular field. “Athar” relies on the data introduced by the researchers which include description of their research projects and outputs of their social impact. The “social” is meant in broad sense, which includes economic, political, cultural and conceptual aspects. The search engine can be used by all stakeholders (researchers, Institutional beneficiaries, policy makers, the public, funding agencies, etc.). It was launched in October 2018, with over 100 projects and researchers, by the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs in the American University of Beirut (AUB). It was founded by Sari Hanafi, Professor of Sociology at AUB, and funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York..

It targets research in and on the Arab World. The platform can be used to share papers, monitor their social impact, and follow the research in a particular field. The website allows its users to create a profile, upload their work(s), select areas of interests and then the user can browse the research with is relevant to their field of interest and could benefit them.. The search engine can be used by all stakeholders (researchers, Institutional beneficiaries, policy makers, the public, funding agencies, etc.). Through its interactive search engine, its carefully categorized sections and diverse themes, it enables the correction of the debates on many pressing issues related to public policies in the Arab world, putting an end to the "ignorance industry" (Agnotology), fake news, and non-scientific evidence-based policies.
