Porto Design Biennale is an international design biennial held in the Portuguese cities of Porto and Matosinhos. It was established in 2019 through a partnership between the municipalities of Porto and Matosinhos and is organised by esad—idea, the research unit of the Escola Superior de Artes e Design (ESAD).[1]

The biennial explores the role of design in contemporary society through exhibitions, conferences, installations, workshops, publications and educational programmes hosted across cultural venues in Porto and Matosinhos.[2]

History

The first Porto Design Biennale opened in September 2019. According to Portugal's Ministry of Culture, the event was created as an international platform dedicated to design and intended to promote dialogue between designers, researchers, institutions and the public.[3]

According to the organisers, the inaugural edition adopted the theme Post Millennium Tension and included exhibitions, conferences, workshops and educational activities distributed across venues in Porto and Matosinhos.[4]

Subsequent editions have continued to examine the relationship between design and contemporary social, cultural and environmental issues through different curatorial approaches.
