Postaw na million is a Polish game show that premiered on TVP2 on 5 March 2011.[1] Currently, it is broadcast on Polish Television ever since. Hosted by Łukasz Nowicki, the series is an adaptation of the British format created by David Flynn.[2]

Two contestants face a high-stakes challenge to safeguarding a cash prize of one million złotys through eight multiple-choice questions. For each question, they must distribute their money across the possible answers, placing their bets on trapdoors corresponding to their choices. Only one answer is correct, any money placed on incorrect options is lost from the game as the trapdoors open. The tension escalates with each round, as contestants must rely on their knowledge, intuition, and risk assessment to retain as much of their initial stake as possible. The game concludes when all eight questions have been answered or when all the money has been eliminated from the game. The remaining amount, if any, is theirs to keep.[3]

New episodes are broadcast on TVP2, with the last episode of season 30 aired on June 6, 2025. Older episodes are retransmitted on TVP2, TVP HD, and TVP Rozrywka (usually older episodes are shown). Episodes of Postaw na million are also available to watch for free on TVP VOD.[4]

Gameplay

At the beginning of each episode, a pair of contestants enters the studio, where Łukasz Nowicki awaits them. At the same time, a narrator provides brief information about the participants, including their age, family background, place of residence, occupation, and interests. Contestant pairs usually consist of couples, friends, family members, or colleagues. The age requirement to participate is a minimum of 18 years.[5]

In front of the players, there is a console with a setup of four monitors and four corresponding trapdoors arranged in a semicircle. Directly beneath each monitor, built into the console, there is a trapdoor on which the participants place stacks of money they are playing with – thereby indicating their chosen answer option.[5]

Before the game, a short talk is conducted with the host. They speak about their interests, ongoing feelings and about their life in general. When that's done, the presenter goes over the basics of the show.

The pair has at their disposal 1,000,000 Polish złoty, divided into 40 bundles banded with excise stamp, each worth PLN 25,000 in 50 złoty banknotes. The team's objective is to successfully advance through eight multiple-choice questions while keeping as much money as possible.[5]

The game starts with the selection of one of two available question categories, which are displayed on the main screen behind the contestants. Both team members must reach a consensus to choose a category. The questions given to the team are based on the selected category. If the team is unable to agree on a category, they may request that the host perform a coin toss to make the decision on their behalf. The selection process is time-limited and should not exceed approximately 10 seconds. If the team remains indecisive, the host will remind them to select one. If they still fail to pick a category, the presenter will proceed with a coin toss to determine the category.[5]

Once a category is selected, the decision is final and cannot be reverted. Four possible answers are then revealed sequentially on the monitors with the trapdoors below and the question & answers on main screen. The host reads the answer options aloud, followed by the question itself. In the event the host makes an error while reading either the question or the answers, the question is deemed void, and a new question from the same category is presented. After the host has successfully presented the answer options and the question, the team has sixty (60) seconds to select what they believe is the correct answer and physically place their money bundles on the corresponding trapdoors. The host provides time reminders at the forty-second and twenty-second marks. During the final ten (10) seconds, the audience begins to shout and count down aloud. Contestants have the right to stop the timer at any moment if they are confident in their answer, without the option to revisit it.[5]

If the team fails to place all the money bundles from the table to the assigned trapdoors when there's few time left, the presenter will instruct that any remaining bundles must be moved immediately to trapdoors. If the money (bundles) remain unassigned to any trapdoor after the timer counted one minute, those funds will be removed from the game entirely and excluded from the potential winnings pool.[5]

After the time limit expires the presenter summarizes the current distribution of the money. The host then asks the participants whether they wish to use an additional thirty (30) seconds to reconsider their choices and potentially rearrange the money. If they decline the offer, the participants and the presenter have a brief talk about course of the round. Next, the presenter reveals the correct answer by releasing (opening) trapdoors corresponding to the wrong answers. Occasionally, the trapdoors are opened one by one, sometimes two simultaneously followed by the remaining one, or all three at once. It is up to Producer's decision in what order the trapdoors are opened. Bundles of money that fell into the trapdoor are forfeited from the game and do not contribute to the prize pool available to the team. Remaining cash, which was placed on the trapdoor assigned to the correct answer are used in the next question (the pair moves the bundles to the center of the table).[5]

The game continues with the same rules. For the first four questions, four possible answers are presented, with only one being correct. During questions 5-7, only three trapdoors remain in play. In the final question, only two central trapdoors are available. One trapdoor must always remain empty, meaning contestants may place bets on a maximum of three trapdoors in questions 1-4, two trapdoors in questions 5-7, and only one trapdoor in the final question. The presenter reminds the contestants how many trapdoors are in play when the number of them changes, and informs them which trapdoors are inactive if contestants try to place bundles on a non-functional one. If participants place money on all available trapdoors with answers, they will be told to immediately adjust their bets so that at least one trapdoor remains unoccupied. If the pair fails to do that, the Producer will impose a penalty by removing one bundle valued at PLN 25,000 from the total prize pool. This bundle will be taken from the stack containing the smallest amount[lower-alpha 2] and will be entirely removed from the game.[5]

The end

Team's game end with one of two possible outcomes:

  1. The game ends when a team loses the entire sum of money allocated at the start (40 money bundles). This occurs if the pair selects incorrect answers and places all their money bundles on designated trapdoors during any point of their game. Once the team has lost all their money, their game ends, and a new duo enters to continue the game.[5]
  2. If the trapdoor does not open on the correct answer for the 8th (final) question, the team wins whatever money remains on the table (minimum of PLN 25,000).[5]

The money won by the team at the end of the episode is divided equally (1/2) between both team members. Each prize is a gross amount and is therefore subject to Polish taxation, with a 10% deduction applied to the winnings. The minimum amount an individual can win on the game show (assuming they do not lose all their money) is PLN 11,250.[5]

Teams are given a consolation prize, which originally included board game Postaw na milion,[6] which has been given for a long time, and in later versions, watches from Swiss company Adriatica.[7]

Additional 30 seconds

Contestants may use this option during any question in the game. Once the 60-second time limit for a question has passed, an additional thirty seconds are granted to move the money placed on the trapdoors.

Players may use this option only once during the course of the game. The decision to use the above option must be made immediately and without any further commentary.[5]

The studio lighting changes to green during the process.

Notes

  1. Excluding the first episode of that season.
  2. If there are two trapdoors with fewer or an equal number of files compared to the others, a PLN 25,000 bundle will be removed from the left trapdoor—the one closest to the Participant standing.
