  • Added additional sources to demonstrate Postman's notability in API development. Most sources are from large companies that document how to access their API using Postman. I also added a guide from a university and one from a book about API development. Ahoyaway (talk) 05:49, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Postman is an enterprise API platform headquartered in San Francisco, California.[1] It provides development tools for testing and building APIs.[2]

Business[edit]

Postman products are used by engineers to develop APIs, which are used by applications to communicate with other applications. As of 2021 Postman reported it was used in over 500,000 organizations.[3] Major companies such as Microsoft[4], Twitter[5], PayPal[6], Cisco[7], and Square[8] use Postman to provide public access to their API systems.

Desktop app[edit]

The desktop application allows users to create, send, and save API requests through a graphical user interface[9]. Users can make API requests using various authentication protocols and certificates. The app supports REST, SOAP, and GraphQL APIs.[10] It is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.[11]

Monitoring[edit]

Postman offers an automated API monitoring service that periodically checks API response times and performance.[12][13]

Enterprise platform[edit]

Postman provides enterprise services for organizations to manage team members and API deployment.[14] A report by Enterprise Strategy Group commissioned by Postman claimed that the service resulted in faster and more effective API development and bug fixing.[15]

Chrome app[edit]

The Chrome app was Postman's first product. Postman stopped supporting the app in November 2017 after Chromium deprecated support for apps on its platform. [11]

History[edit]

Postman first began in 2012 as a Chrome app available from the Google Chrome web store. It was created by Abhinav Asthana, a former Yahoo intern who found it difficult to develop and test APIs.[16]

In October 2014 Asthana, Ankit Sobti and Abhijit Kane co-founded Postman in Bangalore, India.[17]

In May 2015 Postman raised a $1 million seed round.[18]

In February 2016 Postman reported having 2.5 million users.[17] In October 2016 it raised a $7 million Series A round.[19]

In 2017 the company moved its headquarters to San Francisco, while the core technology team remained in Bangalore.[20]

In June 2019 the company raised a $50 million Series B round led by CRV.[21][22]

In June 2020 the company raised a $150 million Series C round at a $2 billion valuation.[23] The company was not yet profitable.[1] In July 2020 the company joined the OpenAPI Initiative, an open-source collaboration project about the OpenAPI specification standards.[24][25]

In August 2021 the company raised a $225 million Series D round at a $5.6 billion valuation.[3] It reported having 425 employees. The company held a Postman Student Summit, an event for students to learn about APIs.[26]
