Potterless is a comedy podcast created, hosted, produced, and edited by Michael Schubert to document his experience as a grown man reading the Harry Potter book series for the first time.[1][2][3] Potterless is a part of the podcast collective Multitude Productions.[4] The first episode was released on October 18, 2016,[3][5] and new episodes are released every Monday.[6]

Schubert began his career in comedy with YouTube and Vine before getting into improv comedy while at college.[7] After entering the podcast business, one of Schubert's first topic ideas was Harry Potter, and the fact that he had never read the series gave him the idea for Potterless; however, he sat on the idea for some time before meeting his now wife, Kelly Schubert (née Beckman).[7] Kelly was a devoted fan of the Harry Potter series, and Schubert decided to start his podcast as an excuse to start talking to her.[7] The name "Potterless" was chosen as it incorporates two puns: first, it is a pun off of Pottermore, now the Wizarding World website and app; and secondly, it is a pun off of the fact that Schubert was Potter-less, having not read the series.[7] The music for Potterless is composed by Bettina Campomanes.[2]

Episode format[edit]

Each episode of Potterless involves Mike Schubert reading chapters of the books or engaging with other Harry Potter material, such as the film adaptations. In each episode, the material covered is analyzed and critiqued, often in a light manner.[2][3] In each episode, Schubert invites one or more Harry Potter fans on as guest hosts to help discuss the material in-depth.[2][3] Potterless is supported on Patreon, and each episode begins and ends by welcoming new patrons and reading the names of those supporting at the "Producer" level.[8] At the end of each episode, Schubert signs off with the phrase, "Wizard On!".

Recurring Segments[edit]

Potterless episodes have several recurring segments. These include:

  • Wingardium Ad-read-osa: Named after a pun on Harry Potter spell "Wingardium Leviosa", this segment occurs roughly halfway through each episode. In it, Schubert announces the sponsor(s) of the week's episode.[6]
  • "Editing Mike": Appearing in most episodes, "Editing Mike" has conversations with "Past Mike" in order to correct mistakes made in the episode and to introduce the "Wingardium Adreadosa" segment.[6]
  • British Quandaries with UK Correspondent Dottie James: In some episodes, Dottie James, a recurring guest of the podcast, will appear to explain British sayings or references in the Harry Potter books that Schubert is not familiar with or mistakenly thinks of as British sayings.[6]
  • Producers: At the beginning and end of each episode, Schubert acknowledges all of the producer level patrons on Patreon and gives them a compliment.
  • Donations: Beginning in December 2017, Schubert started donating $1 for every patron on Patreon to different charities every month. In the first episode of each month, Schubert announces the number of patrons and gives a brief description of that month's charity.[9]

Live Shows[edit]

Schubert regularly performs live shows with guests in an array of cities across the United States. These shows have taken various formats, such as a Harry Potter version of the Bachelor in Los Angeles, CA (and the Bachelorette in Phoenix, AZ), a ranking of Harry Potter characters in Houston, TX, and a discussion of the pros and cons of Percy Weasley in Boston, MA.

Guest hosts[edit]

Some of the most known Schubert's guests are Vanessa Zoltan of the Harry Potter and the Sacred Text podcast, Helen Zaltzman of the Answer Me This! podcast, Matt Young of the Hello from the Magic Tavern podcast, Sequoia Thomas of the Fanatical Fics and Where to Find Them podcast, Miel Bredouw of the Punch Up the Jam! podcast, and Amanda McLoughlin & Julia Schifini of the Spirits podcast. The first round of guest hosts that Schubert brought onto Potterless were friends from his days on Vine.[3] His fiancée, Kelly Beckman, and sister, Meghan Fruehauf, have also appeared on many episodes.

After the Books[edit]

Schubert finished the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, on episode 89. He then created four 'Potterless: Lookback' episodes in which he invited back guests from previous episodes to discuss their appearances. Currently, the lookback episdoes are put on hold in favor of tackling the film adaptations of the books. Mike has stated that after the films, he will make episodes on other Harry Potter canon works, such as the Cursed Child play, video games, board games, and spinoff books and series such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. After covering all canon material, Schubert hopes to move on to fan-derived works such as A Very Potter Musical, Potter Puppet Pals, and fan fiction.

Reception[edit]

Potterless has been viewed as a comedic and in-depth way to look back on, or be introduced to, the Harry Potter book series.[3][10][11] Despite people enjoying Schubert's podcasting style, some have proposed that the podcast might have done better were it hosted by a person from Britain.[1] However, Schubert makes an effort to incorporate the British perspective, often including a segment entitled "British Quandaries with Dottie James," in which Dottie James attempts to answer Schubert's questions regarding British-isms.[12] In 2019, Potterless was voted CelebMix's Podcast of the Year.[13], and in 2018, Schubert was named one of Rice University's "20 Under 30" for his work on Potterless.[14]

By August 2018, Potterless had 50,000 subscribers and 6.5 million downloads.[15] As of February 2020, the podcast had over 500,000 subscribers and 30 million downloads.[2]
