Origin

PowerPlay Manager is an online game of Slovak origin which is free-to-play. Currently (in 2026), it is available in more than 40 languages, including English. The game was officially unveiled in March 2007[1], and registration for the initial version began in June 2007[2][3][4].

Initially, the project was not created by a professional team, yet it has attracted significant interest from the online community, with over 240,000 registered players by December 2009[5][6]. The final version of the first sport featured in the game (ice hockey) was launched in April 2009[7]. The game was then developed into PowerPlay Studio[8][9], which produces sports games of various kinds many years later[10][11].

The game name is derived from the ice hockey term for a numerical advantage situation (a "power play").

Presentation

General

Today (in 2026), PowerPlay Manager (shorten PPM) actually comprises four sports team management games[12]:

Those are separate games, therefore you can choose to manage a single team in your favorite sport or up to four. To play, you need a computer (or a smartphone, or a tablet) with an Internet connection and a web browser. As with most sports management games, the goal is to build the best team, advance to higher divisions, and aim to win the championship title.

To succeed in the game, you must buy players on the transfer market, define your team's tactics and lineup, hire staff, build facilities (training center, HR department, medical center...), train your players, develop your stadium (or arena/rink, depending on the sport), and so on.

Signing up and playing Powerplay Manager is completely free. It is also possible to purchase a PRO pack to access additional features that enhance the gaming experience. However, none of these features are necessary to win: a player who does not purchase the PRO pack has just as many chances to win as anyone else.

Seasons

The game is organized in seasons of 112 days (unless for basket-ball which has seasons of 70 days). During each season, there is a championship and different tournaments. All teams participate in the championship, which operates as a league with, at least, a home-and-away match between all teams in the same league. All teams also compete in the national cup. Other tournaments require a qualification process.

National teams

There are also national teams in PPM : 3 age categories per each country. They are available for the countries with the most players. The head coach of each national team is selected following a vote by all the managers of the concerned country. Then, the head coach manage a team of the best players of the country and try to win the world championship against all others nations.

Languages

The game is translated into more than 40 languages, allowing a large part of the world to access it and compete.

Development history

Launch dates

Starts dates for each sport of PPM:

Sport Announcement Beta Final version
Ice hockey March 2007 June 2007 April 2009
Football ? ? June 1, 2010
Handball ? ? May 27, 2013
Basket-ball ? ? June 23, 2014

Therefore, now, the game runs well for more than a decade which is reassuring in terms of longevity.

The dates provided in this table indicate the major phases of the PPM project. The game continued to evolve beyond the final release dates. Today (in July 2026), the most recent known update took place in May, 2025, improving the auction system shared by the four sports. However, this is a minor update and the main game mecanics will probably not evolve a lot in the future.

About developers

In december 2010, František Debnár has left the PowerPlay Manager development team in order to start the development of another game[13].

Reception

Hockey players

The game is promoted by Peter Šťastný, a Slovak-Canadian former professional ice hockey player ([ppm.powerplaymanager.com/en/godfather.html]) and by David Rodman and Marcel Rodman, two Slovenian former professional ice hockey players ([ppm.powerplaymanager.com/en/godfathers-of-hockey-in-slovenia.html]).

A serious game

PPM is refered as a serious game[14][15] by two french organizations : ONISEP and CRIJ Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

University studies

The University of Kragujevac (Serbia) has published a study named "The use of anglicisms in German and Serbian languages and the degree of their adaptation" based on the analysis of a corpus made up of translations of the PPM website[16].

Technical aspects

Client side

The game is fully designed with web technologies which means it will work perfectly on every hardware with a web browser installed on it. The game does not require any specific executable downloads to work[17].

That is how PPM can be played on quite old hardware without any issues. Any computer, tablet or smartphone which can run a web browser of year 2010 (or later) should work perfectly. The game will also work on any new electronic hardware as long as the web browser maintain the web historical compatibility.

However, a Youtube video[18] shows an another interface for PPM which should be an heavy client... But it seems that there is no mention of such possibilities on the PPM website.

Server side

It is obvious that the game uses the nginx http web server. It is certainly written mainly with PHP. The data are organized trough the use of Redis (a NoSql database system).
